Blazers at Nuggets & Suns at Lakers tonight... It's best for the pick if the Nuggets and Suns win, right?

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Lakers crush Phoenix...
They're getting closer!
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

PHX is getting closer too but not in the way we want them to.
It takes me 3hrs to get to Miami and 1hr to get to Orlando... but I *SPIT* on their NBA teams! "Bless God and bless the (Celts)"-Lady GaGa (she said gays but she really meant Celts)

Blazers at Nuggets & Suns at Lakers tonight... It's best for the pick if the Nuggets and Suns win, right?

For the Nuggets, yeah. For the Suns, its kind of a double-edged sword. Suns win, that puts their standing with the Nets all the further. Lakers win, that puts their standing with the Nets all the closer. Overall, I didn't mind what happened tonight.

I think we can now throw the Suns name into the hat of tanking teams (if we hadn't before). They just got blown out by the Lakers. As badly I want to just blurt out, "WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THIS TEAM?!", I can't help but look at that roster and think they got some nice assets to acquire and probably for cheap. I thought of this deal over the weekend. Tell me who says no.

Boston trades: David Lee, Jared Sullinger, Boston 2016 protected 1st, Dallas 2016 1st
Boston gets: Greg Monroe

Milwaukee trades: Greg Monroe, Michael Carter Williams
Milwaukee gets: Brandon Knight, Markieff Morris

Phoenix trades: Brandon Knight, Markieff Morris
Phoenix gets: David Lee, Jared Sullinger, Michael Carter Williams, Boston 2016 protected 1st, Dallas 2016 1st

Boston does it to get another polished scorer who also is a good rebounder/passer. Defensively Monroe's not a rim protector but his inadequacies IMO are overstated. He actually holds well 1-on-1 against traditional bigs. Just not small athletic ones. Just don't put him in a smallball group. He can do what Sully does on the glass plus put the ball in the bucket, and the Celtics desperately need another consistent scorer besides Isaiah Thomas. Not to mention he won't take any ill-advised 3s unlike Sully.

Milwaukee does it because they would go back to what was working before and Knight gives them good spacing which has been their biggest problem since they got rid of him. Morris, while not a 3 pt shooter, would give them another big who can hit the open jumper too and could really help them in small-ball units. Plus I really don't want to take the chance of Milwaukee stooping down to Brooklyn's standing in the race.

Phoenix does it because they get decent young players (MCW and Sully are not perfect but they are young and would be nice to have as young role players during a rebuild), they get an expiring that clears them of their big money expenditures, some decent picks and hence get to go on an all-out rebuild that people expected them to do 2 years ago. They also get rid of one of their headaches without giving up additional assets just to get rid of him primarily. No it doesn't help the odds of that Brooklyn pick, but the Suns are most likely going to blow it up anyway so may as well get something out of that.

What do you guys think?

Imagine how much less stressful this season would be if we traded this year's Nets pick in a deal at the deadline.  :blank:

Completely agree - Suns are tanking and this is BAD!

So here's where we are at to start the new year.

The Sixers have run away with the #1 seed for the top pick.  They have 3 wins.  Nobody is catching them.

Below the Sixers, we've got a bit of a crunch.

Lakers - 8 wins
Nets - 10 wins
Pelicans - 11 wins
Nuggets - 12 wins
T-Wolves - 12 wins
Suns - 12 wins
Kings - 13 wins
Bucks - 14 wins

The Nets and Lakers have both been a little frisky lately.  The Lakers are healthy and seem to be on an upward trajectory.  The Nets just lost one of their few decent rotation players for the rest of the season, so hopefully that'll send them into a losing spiral.

There's just not enough separation between the Nets and the next 5-7 teams.  It would be a big relief to see the Nets go on a losing streak of 5 games or more just to create a little more space.  If things stay this close, a run of .500 ball for a few weeks here and there could vault the Nets' pick to the back end of the top 10, which would be a bummer.

It did kinda just get interesting. I was all ready to move the Nets in my personal mock year-end standings from 4th worst to 3rd worst and then Jarrett happened.

The Lakers are further proof that the front office can tank, the GM can tank, heck, even the fans can tank, but teams themselves don't tank. If you've got the talent, it's going to take a lot to stop you from winning.

Spots 2-4 are now a toss-up among the Nets, Suns and Lakers.

I like this trade idea, especially for us. I really wanted us to get Monroe this summer. I don't think that Stevens (hence Danny) was/is interested. I don't even think that they met with him.

Monroe is an excellent rebounder, passer, rim runner and down-low scorer who is incredibly durable. Maybe not the best rim protector or defender, but in Stevens defensive schemes, I think that given his physical attributes that Monroe would more than shine.

I hope that if a very good talent becomes available, that we would acquire that asset and that Stevens would adapt his system to that talent if he can't seamlessly integrate that player into the system. He's done that with lesser players. Monroe would immediately become our best player.

Little confused how the Nets have been frisky lately?? They are 3-7 in their last ten games and have lost more than both the lakers and pelicans.

3-7 is a 35 win pace. [EDIT -- this is wrong ... actually a 25 win pace, around where they've been for a while.  They've still been unpleasantly competitive against a number of playoff caliber opponents]

In the last 5 games, they've beaten Boston, Miami, and Chicago, three potential playoff teams.  They lost to the Magic, another playoff caliber team, by 7 points.

They lost to Dallas, another playoff caliber team, by just 1 point in overtime.

In short, they've been pretty competitive.

They also lost their starting point guard for the rest of the season last game.  Hopefully that will send them on a downward spiral.

Phosita, I ma be off on this, but isn't winning 3 games out of 10 a .300 winning percentage? Wouldn't that actually be a little under a 25 game pace? My apologies if I am wrong on this. Also, not to nitpick but it seems like you are getting into Larbrd territory with this sample size and selection. They actually have beaten those teams in a 6 game stretch not 5, and this follows a pretty ugly home loss to minnesota and includes getting blown out by a pretty bad wizards team at home.

You look at the season long, you look at the last 10, anyway you really slice it (with the exception of a 6 game stretch you have selected) and they are at a .300 winning percentage. Considering they just lost one of their few NBA caliber players and we are sinking further and further into polishing the turd territory.
