I don't hate him either.  He has some upside with his shooting and his athleticism.  I don't think we should dump him anytime soon.  I think I am just disappointed that after these first few summer league games he looks less NBA ready than he did last year in the D league.

It is going to be a big challenge for him to get minutes this year if he can't break out and start doing things at an nba level.  I hope that the rest of the summer league and training camp gives him enough time to improve and show something.  Otherwise he might end up spending a lot of time in Maine again this year.

Not sure why anyone would hate a player unless he gives no effort, has done something terrible, or is a Laker.

Young hasn't shown the leap in game many of us hoped for thus far in SL.  It's a little disappointing and frustrating.  I think everyone wishes him well.  I root like heck for him.  Still hoping he can have a big shooting night and gain some confidence before the next SL is over.

I don't hate him.  Hate his lack of versatility which he doesn't seem to care to want to get better at.  I get more annoyed at having to battle the homers in here all the time saying... Give him some time, he's gonna be good, etc, etc.  same type of people you have to argue with about how rondo and green were not beneficial anymore to the team.  At some point you gotta use your eyes and see that it's just not working nor is it going too.

Young needs work in areas that he should already have developed or shown improvement in...work ethic, foot work, and creating his shot.  That's all desire to get better.  He's been in the league two years and still has the same bad habits.  I'm not willing to sit around and watch jeff green 2.0 while other guys lose time on the bench.  Said the same thing about green... Your in the best basketball association in the world, act like that means something to you.  I know he's just a kid but he hasn't shown signs he's able to improve or willing.  Not interested.

He's been in the league one year. This is his second year. Otherwise, I pretty much agree with you.

I hope he gets it. I don't think he will. PROVE ME WRONG PLEASE, James!
My biases, in order of fervor:
Pro:
Smart, Brown, Hayward, Tatum, Kemba, Grant Williams, Sleepy Williams, Edwards!

Anti:
Kanter, Semi, Theis, Poierier

I don't think anyone hates him... I think it's just the realization that he might be playing himself out of the league.   His summer league couldn't be going much worse.  It's pretty discouraging for a 2nd year player to be that awful.  He wasn't a top prospect.  It's not a big deal.  If he's the next Fab Melo or JaJuan Johnson, nobody is going to lose sleep over it.  A lot of mid-to-late 1sts result in guys who don't make it in the league.

I do sort of dislike him. I guess now that I'm getting a little older and crankier I don't have the patience for players like him. These type of players have disappointed me so many times, I just can't take them anymore.

Heck I defended Fab Melo to the day he was shipped out. I've just sort of realized players either have it or they don't. Taking five years to develop into a decent NBA player just isn't going to cut it.

He's just an immature, lazy kid. Hey so was I at one point. But I also wasn't getting paid a ton of money to play a pro sport. Just move this guy already

I like what I saw about Young in those SL games.
His body language, hustle, passing and overall attitude was very good.
He looks like a different player if you compare with last season.
He has a bad shooting games, that's too bad, it would have give him the confidence to start the season in nba.
I think that's why a lot of fans are very disappointed, they expect too much from him.

Agree.

I mean he was taken in the late first round despite being a lottery prospect.

Also by the way Young and Hunter have pretty much similar numbers. Eventually, the shots for Young will fall, but he needs to move more on offense, particularly if hes looking to get open for a shot.

You like what hes done? He hasn't shown me much of anything. He just stands around and misses open 3's. Doesn't know what to do with the ball in his hands and still looks lazy on D. I by no means hate the guy but he isn't passing the eye test. I had high hopes after reading about how he's gained muscle and vert and attacking the rim and yet i see none of that in a summer league where he should almost score at will.

I'm not going to throw him under a bus and compare him to Fab Melo of all people..

Yes he hasn't shown me anything that's like, "wow, this guy is going to be a star."

But I liked the fact he can contribute other things, especially when his offense isn't working. I do agree though, Young needs to learn how to move off the ball better. He seems like he doesn't know what to do on offense. I'm going to judge Young until the actual season starts and ends, before I consider him a bust or a waste of a draft pick.

I agree i am not by any means saying this is the end all be all for James, but i am disappointed. I am afraid if he continues to play like that there wont be much to judge him on except for the D-League again. I am hopeful that James learns how to move off the ball better and knock down the open shots. I also hope he can get it going by putting the ball on the floor and attacking. I feel as if the game is too quick for him still.

This is also why I don't like Calipari sometimes.

Its all star collegiate players, but absolutely no effort towards building the team mentality.

I think Young is just used to things going his way, and now hes lost at what to do.

I think Hunter is a much smarter player with a better feel for the game, better focus, and better lateral mobility. So while Young looks discouraged before he even tries keeping with him man and then gives up halfway through the play, Hunter is going to follow through and become a good defender in this system.

Huge differences in their basketball IQs.   You can tell Hunter is a coaches son.  Both of them shoot better when they are balanced.

It's not that people hate Young. It's just that people are Celtics fans first and he hasn't shown anything that will help the team moving forward and in the future.

I don't necessarily hate James Young, but I'm hating the actual drafting of Young more and more.

Given where this kid was drafted and what he showed each time he was sent down to the D-League last season, he should be right along side Smart and tearing up the summer league right now...and he's been pretty pathetic.  That's not a good sign.

I get it, I get it, he's super young.  But he was also drafted 17 overall and led his national championship team in scoring.  In my opinion, he'd be showing more than he has so far in his short career, especially during this summer league.

I can't help but think that Danny may have blown that pick

It's because they bought into all of the postseason fluff talk about how well he's doing in the weight room and allowed it to build unreasonable expectations in their minds.  Unfortunately, basketball isn't played in a weight room.

Honestly I liked what he has done in SL, I'm not thoroughly impressed by any means, because I still believe Young has yet to hit that 'gear,' to be fully aggressive. But I enjoyed his passing, and his renewed hustle on boards and loose balls.

I do think Smart is a perfect influence on Young, and I believe those two are destined for something great if they stick together and form a good backcourt bond.

I'm high on Hunter too, so it'll be fun to see how Hunter and Young compete for the spots.

I still think we need to be patient with Young.

James Young demolished the D-League, and I would say the talent level is definitely comparable, or not that much different in terms of skill.

So let me ask you guys, why do you hate Young? Or why don't you?
I don't think it's hate.  I think it's really disappointment that Young isn't showing signs of putting it together this summer.  definitely some frustration that a guy that showed he can score in D-league can't score against the low level of talent he's played against this summer
