Honestly I liked what he has done in SL, I'm not thoroughly impressed by any means, because I still believe Young has yet to hit that 'gear,' to be fully aggressive. But I enjoyed his passing, and his renewed hustle on boards and loose balls.

I do think Smart is a perfect influence on Young, and I believe those two are destined for something great if they stick together and form a good backcourt bond.

I'm high on Hunter too, so it'll be fun to see how Hunter and Young compete for the spots.

I still think we need to be patient with Young.

James Young demolished the D-League, and I would say the talent level is definitely comparable, or not that much different in terms of skill.

So let me ask you guys, why do you hate Young? Or why don't you?

You like what hes done? He hasn't shown me much of anything. He just stands around and misses open 3's. Doesn't know what to do with the ball in his hands and still looks lazy on D. I by no means hate the guy but he isn't passing the eye test. I had high hopes after reading about how he's gained muscle and vert and attacking the rim and yet i see none of that in a summer league where he should almost score at will.

I'm not going to throw him under a bus and compare him to Fab Melo of all people..

Yes he hasn't shown me anything that's like, "wow, this guy is going to be a star."

But I liked the fact he can contribute other things, especially when his offense isn't working. I do agree though, Young needs to learn how to move off the ball better. He seems like he doesn't know what to do on offense. I'm going to judge Young until the actual season starts and ends, before I consider him a bust or a waste of a draft pick.

I like what I saw about Young in those SL games.
His body language, hustle, passing and overall attitude was very good.
He looks like a different player if you compare with last season.
He has a bad shooting games, that's too bad, it would have give him the confidence to start the season in nba.
I think that's why a lot of fans are very disappointed, they expect too much from him.

I still like james Young.  He's 19.   His shot just hasn't been falling but liked the hustle.

I agree i am not by any means saying this is the end all be all for James, but i am disappointed. I am afraid if he continues to play like that there wont be much to judge him on except for the D-League again. I am hopeful that James learns how to move off the ball better and knock down the open shots. I also hope he can get it going by putting the ball on the floor and attacking. I feel as if the game is too quick for him still.

Agree.

I mean he was taken in the late first round despite being a lottery prospect.

Also by the way Young and Hunter have pretty much similar numbers. Eventually, the shots for Young will fall, but he needs to move more on offense, particularly if hes looking to get open for a shot.

This is also why I don't like Calipari sometimes.

Its all star collegiate players, but absolutely no effort towards building the team mentality.

I think Young is just used to things going his way, and now hes lost at what to do.

He's either gonna be really Good, when he's like 23-24...or he's gonna be out of the league....it could go either way for this young man---he has to stick with it.

There were high hopes for Young when he was drafted and so far he doesn't look like an NBA player.

He's still very ... young ... ahem.  So there's plenty of time for him to grow into a player.  But I think the ceiling is lower than a lot of people realize.

If you limit your expectations to "decent bench wing" e.g. CJ Miles or Martell Webster (both guys took a while to develop), I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Considering CJ Miles went in the 2nd round, although he could've been drafted higher, and Webster went 6th, I'll take that.

I still think Young can do better than those two, but we'll have to see.

he looked great in the d-league, his stroke was silky-smooth. at the very least he'll eventually turn into a good spot-up shooter.

but so far in the NBA he has that "deer in the headlights" look, so we haven't really seen that nice shooting yet.

and so far the rest of his game looks quite raw, you can almost see the gears turning when he drives to the rim or plays defense. it's hard to tell how much of his struggles are just shell-shock and how much are actual lack of skill.

but considering he's not even 20 years old yet, it's way too early to bury him.

Exactly what I meant in my previous OP.

I know what you mean, and hopefully Young starts hitting some shots to get in rhythm. He has just too good of a shot release and form to not be able to knock some down.

Yeah, well... So does your name!

Also forgot to mention I like the fact Young got to the free throw line 11 times in 3 games. It means hes being aggressive and trying to draw contact. Like I stated, I feel like we're going to see him start knocking down shots, and it should greatly improve his confidence.

The hate for him is as irrational as the love for him. He hasn't done anything to show he's a different player than when he was drafted or when the season ended. He's been a net negative in summer league, but it's summer league.

Also, the guy who complained about Calipari: that's silly that he doesn't know how to build a team mentality. You have guys for years now coming from Kentucky who sacrificed quite a bit to play together and to try to win. A ton of the Kentucky players could go to smaller schools and be the biggest fish. Karl Anthony Towns and Anthony Davis could have gone to schools where they could have played more perimeter oriented games dominating the ball and instead they went to play for Cal and sacrificed a ton of shots and personal exposure for team exposure. He gets such a bad rap for being this terrible person for some reason when he's the best in college basketball as college basketball is now constituted.
We're the ones we've been waiting for.
