About 6 teams still have cap available greater than $5MM. Ours is dependent on stretching Wallace's contract over 3 years though. Also expect something done to get us back over the cap and below the tax threshold as outlined below:

Note that until contracts are officially signed, spending power can be fluid.  For instance, the Boston Celtics need to drop under the cap to afford Amir Johnson at $12 million, but if they can get the Toronto Raptors to send Johnson to them via sign and trade, using their Rajon Rondo trade exception, the Celtics can stay above the cap which would preserve their Mid-Level Exception and other trade exceptions.

Out of curiosity what would be Toronto's motivation to do this? Would they get something out of it? Or is it just one of those things where you don't want to make enemies and show the players of the league you're a mean franchise?

this is all kind of new to me.
For what reason would Toronto do this? It appears as though they would just be helping us out which makes no sense considering we are Atlantic rivals?

It would be interesting if they could work Johnson into a sign and trade deal, not really sure if having our TPE rather than getting under the salary cap would be better
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

I believe S+T deals must be at least 3 years long, so for Amir to be a S+T the reported terms of his deal would need to be changed.

Not really sure at this point what the Celts would use that cap space on anyway, though.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

That is correct. Also not clear what the incentive would be to TOR. I do think Cs try to get back over the cap and keep their trade exceptions which are pretty large.

Exactly, there is basically nothing left on the market right now.

  • GOT IT!!!
Toronto gets a huge exception and the C's get to keep theirs (Prince exception could come in handy) and just have the last two years of Johnson's contract non-guaranteed. Makes sense all around to me.

TOR is over the cap, no? In which case, they would get a $12 mil trade exception. That's an asset for a GM like Ujiri.

you can add another unguarenteed year and you can do a S&T

They get a trade exception out of it, which is good for 12 months. So they could add a high priced player (up to Johnson's cap figure) to their roster if they wanted to without having to send any salary out.

Let's hope for a S&T so we can land Jordan Hill, Dorrell Wright, or Gerald Green

Having cap space was a bit more relevant when there were actual players of interest we could get, like Harris and before trading for Lee.

We could've manufactured about $15M in cap space with just stretching Wallace.

I'll have to revise where we are currently later today after the trade.

That said, I think a S&T with Toronto is a very strong possibility. As for terms, only the first season needs to be guaranteed, so I don't think it would be a big obstacle in adding a new year with a non-guaranteed or option.

Why Toronto would do it? Well, they might get a big TPE for themselves (need to double check this, not sure if it applies when you're trading against another TPE) and a protected 2nd rounder.
