It's a holdover from the 1987 offseason -- an effort to offset the fact that at the time the CBA had expired.  :)

Quote
The moratorium, which started on June 17, was a joint agreement by the league and the players' association in an effort to hasten negotiations to replace the labor contract that expired two days earlier. During that span, teams were not permitted to sign draft choices, free agents or conduct rookie and free-agent training camps.

edit: I was curious as to what sorts of player-movement would cause the owners to see something that needed 'fixing' in the next CBA. I did not expect it to come from DeAndre Jordan.

The NBA accountants need time to do a full year audit and use some complex math to set the cap for next year. It used to take them much longer for a similar audit.

Lost all respect for DeAndre.

Coward move.

He's not allowed to change his mind?

He certainly is allowed to change his mind, but, when you've verbally committed to something and back out, that's cowardly.

I would understand if he just entertained talks with the mavs, and decided to go with the clips.
But he committed, and now he backs out. Not a good look for him.

Don't get me wrong, this is awesome for the Celtics, we might get a good pick out of the Mavs.
But I stand by my point.

He didn't even have the decency to tell the Mavs man to man that he's going to back out. If reports Re true that he wasn't even answering his phone calls from the Mavs, not only is he a coward, he's classless.

I also heard this, Mark Cuban has been calling him, and DJ didn't bother to respond.
I agree with you 100%

what's crazy is that we might end up with their pick in 2016.
They have Parsons, and Dirk, good 3-4 combo, but not world breaking,
and Cuban said that Wes Matthews is joining them. That trio might not make the playoffs with no legit PG and no legit rim protector/Center....

Mark Cuban is in a tricky spot - go all in and remake your team to add to the trio OR try and sell Parsons and Dirk and bottom out - which I don't understand why he would consider this...

It's truly amazing that Broussard continues to maintain employment with ESPN.

Everyone and their mom (except for the ESPN suits apparently) can see that this guy is absolutely full of it and tends to conjure things out of midair and throw it out there.  His "sources" thing is an absolutely joke when you know he's just parroting things from Woj or Stein or other "insiders".

it's a crap move by Jordan but not as bad as the one Boozer pulled on Cavs management where he agreed to resign if they let him out of his deal early and then he bolted the franchise instead of resigning.

Someone already addressed this but the Boozer deal is more complicated than that.

For those people saying Dallas is just gonna straight tank into the top of the draft...

They would have to be one of the worst 4 teams in the league to ensure they keep a Top-7 pick.  That is not happening with the current roster.

And for the pick to be not-so-good...they would have to be a top-10 team...which is also not happening.

This was a FANTASTIC result for us.

It's going to be a little weird for them. The best thing for the team, easily, would be to get something for Dirk and go in the tank. The problem is, I don't think Dirk wants to go anywhere and I don't think he or Carlisle wants to tank. Tough call.
