This isn't even the first time this has happened in basketball is the thing.  Did people avoid Utah after Boozer?  He had a verbal agreement with the Cavs in place (going so far as to make him unrestricted per his wishes) and Utah offered him a big deal to sign him.

Who's gonna trade for Nowitzki now?

How about Washington --  Beal + Nene + picks for Dirk.

KD joins Wall and Dirk in Washington next season.

dirk would be perfect for washington, they really need the jump-shooting.

no way do i trade beal, though. that kid is going to be a star.

So, good luck to Doc Rivers ever completing a trade with another team again, right?  I mean, he's got to get blackballed by other GMs for doing this.
I have no idea what's going to happen here, but I feel like there could be significant fall-out.  A lot of plans were based on Jordan's... I keep bringing up Biyombo as an example.  If you're his agent and you check out the NBA landscape for centers and realize that Dallas already has Jordan, Lakers already have Hibbert... options are dwindling and you best take money from the first team that offers (4 mil from Toronto), there's a real possibility that you could have gotten more elsewhere, but backing out of your Toronto agreement might still be frowned on.  All sorts of free agent signings and trades may need to be reconsidered now.

When you start messing with multi million dollar contracts and billion dollar companies, people tend to get upset.

Yeah, it's horsecrap, because who knows how many players this little change of heart affected.

As someone said earlier, this would almost guarantee a lockout coming in 2017.

And Jason Kidd just finished a season in a position he acquired by conspiring with the FO to fire their then coach while he was coaching another team. Holding grudges is just a handicap when it comes to business.

This was dramatic, but not problematic. Nothing about the agreement was binding. Regret happens. He rushed his decision and that was the result. Sucks for the Mavs, but that's life.

DALLAS (AP) -- A person with knowledge of the situation says Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has given up hope that free-agent center DeAndre Jordan will come to Dallas.

After a Los Angeles Clippers contingent traveled to Houston to try to convince Jordan to stay with his original team, the person said Cuban had begun telling members of his organization that Jordan was reneging on a deal with the Mavericks.

Really shady move by DJ. He was the only one on that Clips team that I liked. I guess that honor will have to go to the Truth now. That's a pretty Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.ty move by Doc and the organization as a whole, too.

The logical move is to shorten the dead period where teams can talk to FAs and informally agree but can't officially sign anything.  Maybe even eliminate it altogether.  It's seemed like an anachronism for a while now, anyway.

Aren't some forms of verbal agreements legally binding in other areas?

Mavs now have a ton of cap space and need a starting big man. Let's flip DLee to them for their 2018 pick (do they still have it?). Extra bonus of keeping them out of the bottom seven so we actually get their pick this year. Unlikely but it would be classic Danny Ainge :p

It depends... did they shake on it?  Was DeAndre crossing his fingers?

I feel for Mavs fans.  I'd be seriously upset if a major free agent did this to the Celtics.

I certainly agree with you on this.

Doesn't look good for DJ.

Either way it is his decision to make, but not the way you want prospective employers to see you.
