Signing Amir Johnson to that contract, in a vacuum, is a solid move.
Re-signing Crowder and Jerebko, both also solid moves for fair money.
The trouble is that this is not a vacuum.
I'm not as sure as some people that Amir Johnson will really make the Celts much better than they were with Bass. I also don't see, as of now, why the Celts needed to pay $5 million to retain Jerebko, who's lined up as the 3rd or 4th string power forward, depending on how you set up the depth chart.
Failing a major move in the draft or free agency, I wanted Ainge to make a move or two similar to what Philly did yesterday -- utilize cap space to acquire future value from other teams in return for absorbing contracts.
Bottom line, I guess my #1 hope was that the draft and / or free agency would bring some clarity and focus to the roster; failing that, I was hoping Ainge would make some creative moves to continue to improve the team's position.
Instead, it appears that Ainge and Co. decided to simply preserve the status quo and punt on next season. The Celts likely won't be bad enough to get a top 10 pick, nor good enough to rise higher than they did this past year.
Where does that leave me as a fan? Disappointed. Feeling foolish for expecting more, for assuming Ainge was cleverer, and bolder, than that.
