Why is noone talking about IT being shopped? His contract is nice and he can easily put up 20ppg.
That's easy -- because he's a keeper.

If IT can't get Love here this off season than he needs to go ASAP. You've seen the best of him and in the playoffs you saw the real him, ball hog that plays hero ball. I highly doubt he can change who he is the only thing we can do is play him less. In the regular season he gets away with being undersized and being a gunner. In the playoffs teams focus on him and shut him down and if you remember it wasn't that hard the Cavs made him look like a high school kid out there.
I'll take my chances with a "ball hog" who averages 7 apg and gets to the line 9 times per game.

To each his own, you forgot to mention he had 3.5 turnovers shot .333 from the floor and .167 from the 3 point line.

If we can get a scoring superstar in here, I see no reason to keep IT. We have a lot of good scoring guards now. Package IT, Bradley, Sully/KO, and some picks for a main piece. You guys want to build around IT?

I'd like to keep Thomas as a sixth man and explore the options for finding a superstar who won't necessarily score 20ppg.

Youre not leaving yourself much wiggle room.

I think volume scorers are overrated, so I don't really want a scoring superstar who can't contribute in other ways if he has a 3-14 shooting night.  I want a star who can make a game-winning assist.  I don't want a star who wants and end-of-game iso with the ball in his hands down one with fifteen seconds left.  (It's a different story if the coach calls that as the play.)  I want a defense-first superstar.  I'd rather go with an ensemble strategy for roster creation than build around a Carmelo Anthony-type star.

I dont disagree, but why covet IT who cant start over Smart on our team? We are not even sure he is happy in that sixth man role.

I think we'll trade Smart for either Noel or Okafor. With Philly having 3 center & Cousins probably staying in Sacto or his price being too high, it's the best thing to do then go after Love & Pierce. A team of IT4-Crowder-Pierce-Love-Noel/Okafor with Rozier-Bradley-Turner-Jerebko-Zeller off the bench is a contender.

I'd try my best to shop Banks 2.0 as well. He just isnt a starter in the NBA.

Your zeal of calling him Banks 2.0 is hilarious to read!

looks like danny was as underwhelmed by Smart's rookie campaign as I was.

But I don't think this means we'll dump him.  It means we'll try to combine him with a bunch of other assets and get a superior prospect like Noel or Embiid.

Good luck, Danny.

Dude, stop patting yourself on the back, cause your not even correct. It's pompous. Smart is the prototypical Ainge player. Tough, defense first combo guard with versatile skills and huge intangibles/BBIQ. They rave about him all the time, and not just for show.

But Ainge knows if he's going to bring a star player here outside of FA, Smart is going to be involved. He's our most valuable player right now trade wise. All he's doing is letting other GMs know that if the right deal comes along, Smart can be involved. He's not looking to trade him because "he was as underwhelmed with his rookie campaign as you", that's ridiculous. He just knows that Smart has the most value, the Sixers have lots of bigs and would love to have Smart, and we need a good young big. Fact is Noel won't fit next to Okafor or Embiid, so Ainge sees a chance to make a deal. Bit that only happens if Smart is involved.

See, Ainge understands the game and knows that Smarts rookie season was far from underwhelming. Maybe if the only thing you pay attention to is the stat line. But he was a major contributor on a team that was one of the best in the league after the ASG who played truly excellent defense, made big shots and within the context of his role, exceeded expectations. We were trying to win games. Smart didn't even bring the ball up much, his role was to play great defense and hit open jumpers. That's it. You can't score 15 a game of the ball isn't in your hands a lot. You can't drive to the hoop unless your plays are run for you to open up a driving lane, which happened progressively more toward the end of the year with success. You can't post up smaller guards unless there's a designed action to pull the bigs away from the rim. You can't generate a lot of assists unless your a primary ball handler. His defense was clearly much better than his offense, so good in fact it demands major playing time because he was often the best defender on the floor. But since his offense isn't as fully developed, playing him off the ball, working on his jumper and slowly inter grating him into a larger role was the right thing to do.

Smart was only underwhelming to people who care more about the box score than what happens on the court. DA isn't one of those people. If he's "shopping" Smart, it's only in a trade for a real difference maker. For what it's worth, I think Bradley is the one on the move. Rosier is the perfect replacement for him, and Bradley/Sully or KO and Hunter are valuable enough to get us a legit 5.

This team would find it difficult to make it out of the first round. I dont like IT as the starting guard for a contending team. I just dont see how that could possibly be successful.

IT most certainly did not shoot .167 from 3 this season.

yeah ok... agree to disagree.   I expected more from Smart.  Many people here did too (I've seen the threads).  I don't think we anticipated that his rookie numbers would be on a par with rookie Iman Shumpert.  That was disappointing.  If you expected Iman Shumpert numbers, good for you.  I expected more.  Anyways...   The only way we're trading him is in a trade package for a much better prospect (noel/embiid) or in a trade package for a star (Melo/Cousins)...  None of that is likely to happen... so whatever.   Here's hoping Smart makes strides in year 2.   He's got the mental makeup that you can't rule him out.   He's a great defender.  HOpefully he can develop into a competent offensive player... right now he's got a long way to go to even be as good as prime Tony Allen.

I was with you until you said prime Tony Allen. If Allen had anything close to a jumpshot hed be all star caliber.

I'm higher on Smart than you. Only slightly higher than you on what he gave us this year, but significantly higher as to what his upside is (I think with the jump shot he we will be better than prime Tony Allen next year)

Completely agree with everything else though, which is more agreement than we usually have, so TP.

It's fine if you're not high on Smart but it is a bit of a contrast how you instantly buy into unsubstantiated rumors that he's being shopped while you deny to the death the significance of any rumors that cast aspersions on the health of Joel Embiid.

Great words from a great man

I did too. I was disappointed with the lack of scoring. I thought he'd be able to get into the paint more often to score in the paint or at the FT line. Offer some of a (albeit below average) drive and kick threat.

I hope Smart shows more creativity offensively next year.

I thought Smart played terrific until the ankle injury. He went on to rely on jump shooting which improved over the course of the season. Lets see if he puts it all together.
