It's all speculation, etc etc, but my thinking is, if we really are shopping Smart, it's because Danny thinks Smart has a lower ceiling than we might have initially believed, and is hoping to flip him to a team that sees more potential there, ideally as part of a package that lands a better talent.

Not so much considering him a "mistake" as believing there's a gap between his actual value and perceived value around the league that may close if we don't move him soon.

Would really like to see a Smart for Noel swap. It would greatly benefit both teams. Smart and a future 1st (with some protections) for Noel? I'd hate to see Smart go, but for Noel it'd be worth it.

I don't buy that report at all.

I'm really tired of all these run of the mill reporters suddenly having "sources".

I think "sources" use the term "shopping" and "on the trading block" incredibly loosely.

Does this give us flexibility to trade Smart? For sure. But this idea of shopping around is a bit ridiculous.

What do you think "shopping" means?  I don't think it means Ainge is dead-set on moving Smart.  I think it means that Ainge isn't treating Smart as untouchable and is willing to include Smart in his initial trade proposals.

Right.  This isn't about Smart being a bad player so much as it is about him presenting this past year as a consummate defensive role player / intangibles guy.  Which is great to have, but not what you're looking for as a team lacking in high end talent.

If Danny can find somebody who will give up a player with more upside, or at least who fills a greater need on the team moving forward, I imagine he'll do it.  But that's not to say they'll trade Smart for anything less than a really nice haul.

I would definitely trade Smart for Noel. Maybe then I would understand the draft.

Christ,  what are they doing?   already admitting smart was a mistake?  literally the only thing of value?  what's that say about ko, sully and all they other crap.

Or maybe Smart is the only one considered to have value (and is also on a favorable rookie contract) by other GM's and that's who the Celtics must use to get back a player they need.  All teams are looking out for themselves in trades and unless they're completely inept trying to get back more value than they're giving up.

Maybe Marcus Smart is closer to Marcus Banks.  :)

I would agree with this 100% and I like Smart.

Noel + KO might be a decent fit.  Play KO as a stretch 4 (what he really is) and let Noel do the dirty work.  I really hope KO improves this year.  We really need one of our younger players to make a leap to be an impact player.

To me "shopping" means that you're looking to find value for a player in the market vs. what I think Ainge is actually doing, looking for a star type of player and willing to part with Smart if needed. Also, what I think Ainge might be doing, willing to hear offers.

I would assume that's what's taking place. I don't buy the notion that Ainge is going around offering Smart to see what he can get out of him.

it doesn't make sense to me

Smart was a 6th overall pick, and has shown he can play in the NBA, tremendous work ethic and displays good leadership skills.

I don't know much about Rozier but you're trading away a proven asset for potential?

just doesn't make any sense

I'm only trading Smart for a high draft pick and/or a star player.

This is mostly just speculation. Like us, I'm sure "league sources" are assuming that we plan to ship out Smart based on the fact that we picked the poor man's version yesterday.

"Source: Ainge will continue shopping every player on the team, forever."

I mean, he was shopping core pieces during our run as championship contenders. What does anyone expect now?
