Given Harris will be a max contract guy for exactly one year and then his contract will devalue due to the next two anticipated cap increases, why not try to sign him away from Orlando?

Also remember people, he is a restricted free agent. No sign and trades with RFAs.

Let's say the Celts sign him to an offer sheet, can the Celts then negotiate a deal with the Magic to not match it?

Seems like, if the Magic have only two choices -- sign him or let him walk for nothing -- they've got to sign him and then explore trading him later.

No, the Celtics can not send anything the Hornets way so that they don't match the offer sheet. That isn't allowed. Also if Orlando matches they can not trade Harris for one year without his consent and can't trade Harris to the the Celtics during that year.

I was definitely under the impression that under the new cbs, a s&t was allowed - but the player could only be signed to the same four year contract he would sign with another team. This was talked about quite a bit in the Kevin Love threads. If what you are saying is true, it really deserves its own thread as I am not the only person who thought this.

Either way, I agree it would be great to sign Harris now because of the rising cap.

EDIT: okay, I see you specified restricted free agents (players coming off of rookie deals). I assume what I said above is still allowed with guys like Love and Aldridge.

He's about to turn 23...but I agree he's pretty darn good for his age when you consider he's younger than Olynyk and even a tad younger than Sully.

Thing is if we offer this kid 15 million it's going to be a market value contract in 2016-17.

I think the idea of taking this guy is to
a) fill some of that cap room before the large spike while he has potential- he's only started one full season in the NBA.
b) fills a position of need for us and also lets us play super small ball with Crowder at the SF and Harris at the PF.
c) get his numbers up with a carefully orchestrated offense that he can be the focal point of and increase his trade value and the subsequent 'package' value that we can offer teams with our Brooklyn picks.

If he starts averaging 20 points, 5 boards, 5 assists then a trade package of

Harris+2016 Dallas pick+one or two of the 2016, 17', or 18' Brooklyn picks looks pretty amazing for someone like Cousins.

I see him more as a PF, but you'd need to play him next to a shot blocker in that case - something we do not have.

So he'd end up playing SF, where he doesn't stretch the defense enough, nor have the quickness to guard guys on the perimeter.

With the cap going up, it's worth a shot but it's not exactly the type of move which would convince other free agents to come here too. Which is a lot of what we're striving for in free agency.

FWIW, they say Pistons want Carroll and Green more because they will be easier to sign (They are UFAs). I could see them getting Green because the Spurs will re-sign Leonard and it sounds like Aldridge is next in line. They won't have money for Green if they get those two although I don't think they'll miss him much if he leaves.

I'm all for Harris. He is young, talented, and he fills a need even if we know what his flaws are. I think CBS can make him special. Doesn't look he will be difficult especially since it looks like the Magic don't seem motivated to keep him.

Other than Lebron, Butler, and Leonard, (all of which are not coming here) who DO we spend money on. Its not just one guy. You also sign Monroe and then your role players will be GREAT role players (who have already stepped up bigtime when forced to do more at the end of last season)

Yes, probably but I would say 8 out of 10 players in the NBA right now are probably overpaid.

Point is we need scoring and Harris provides it.

Plus he's only 22 and could only get better.

I say get it done and this could help make up for an awful draft.

I like Harris as a 4 for us with some minutes at the 3. He really had trouble staying in front of  3's for Orlando. He's only 22, has a strong drive and post up game as well as the ability to knock down the 3.

He won't put us over the top but he makes us better and improves the assets we have. When you are trying to build up assets to eventually trade for a superstar, adding a big asset without giving one up is huge.

I think its a no brainer at $15 mil.

Hes young, fits a positional need, shown to be a go to wing scorer late in games. And he rebounds well for his position and can slide to the 4 if we wanna go small.

Yeah... and if you wait until next season, you'll be competing with basically every team in the league to sign free agents since the cap jumps 20 mil... need to get talent here asap.

Could someone please explain why players don't always sign with their current team using their bird rights to a one-more-year-long deal (after asking to be traded to a particular team of their choosing)? Or can Boston (or Detroit  ) offer him as many years as he can get in Orlando?

If he starts averaging 20/5/5 then I don't think people will want (or reluctant) to package him lol.
