If I'm ainge and I know he's a jerk than no thanks, but man at 33 in the second round to just have a 5% chance to land an enormous elite shot blocker probably a good gamble.

Yes. Absolutely. A worthy low price gamble in the 2nd gamble.

I'd grab him with our 28th. I think he may even get taken before that but I hope not.

I like how you split the no and he likes weed which are both "no's" to skew this way you wanted it to go.   You should poll for MSNBC or FOX News.

I honestly don't care much for who we pick up after the 16th pick. Just as long as he doesn't get the rest of the team drugged up.

I think I'd like to see the Celts either trade or draft-and-stash their last three picks in this draft.  I don't have a lot of faith that this draft is very deep in NBA-quality players.

Either that, or take a chance on some high-profile players from big programs who had underwhelming college years.  Cliff Alexander, Dakari Johnson, or either of the Harrison twins, for example.  Among internationals, Mam Jaiteh has always seemed like a solid prospect to me.

At 33 he's worth a shot. But I am hesitant, with all the negatives I hear. The drugs, the heart, the suspensions. On the the other side of the coin, the chances of getting a player that is useful at 33 is slight.

If he's so dumb, that he actually blows an opportunity to play in the NBA, and earn millions for him and his family, then let him be an advertisement to others, on which road to not take.

Re: Upshaw, I think people should remember that addiction is not really a choice for many people.  Too often people with alleged drug issues off the court are talked about as if they are lazy, don't care enough about basketball, etc.

Could be Upshaw actually has a legitimate substance abuse problem that he has been struggling with for a while.  If so, he bears responsibility to take steps to try and deal with it, but it's not as simple as just "deciding to" or "wanting it."

You could draft him and send him overseas for a year, or dleague

No question. 2nd round is perfect because you don't have to give guaranteed money. That gives him a heavy incentive to stay clean, you make it clear that you'll tolerate no nonsense. Might not work out still, but the downside is a wasted 2nd round pick--not a big deal at all-- whereas the upside is a dominant shotblocker, so this is a no-brainer.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's the first pick of the 2nd round.

  • Eagerly Awaiting the Next Fantasy Draft
It's funny because I have come out many times on this forum against drafting Upshaw. However, most of those threads were about drafting him with the 16th pick.

With the 33rd pick or the 45th pick Upshaw is a steal. If we pass him up at 33 though I think it might be an indication that he wasn't on our board at all due to his addiction concerns.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

This.

Not worth the gamble with 16 or 28 but 33 or 45, definitely.
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!  I openly hope we take him in the second round. ;D

However, If we keep all of our picks and still pass on him I will trust Ainge on this one, in terms of him knowing the whole story, which I don't.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
Everyone knows my position on this, so I'm not going to be pounding that again and again.

With that said, I'm just hoping that we get him, period. Regardless of where he gets picked, I'm just hoping it's us who's picking him.
