This is good.

Im a little shaky on the rules. Can they go over the cap to resign him? if they can Im still encouraged because it means Young is getting a 10+ mil multiyear deal with Brooklyn which I do not believe is a shrewd move and will add to the value of our picks down the road.

The better news is if they cant go over the cap it means hes gone and Brook Lopez could well be gone too. This is very big.

They are more than $4 million over the cap, so they have the Taxpayer MLE (three years for ~3 million, essentially).

edit: I think. I'd have to double check to see if his deal counts against the cap as they sign a new one, even though he opted out.

They can resign him but at the cost of going over the cap. I head rumors that the owner is on a mission to cut costs, so chances are small he resigns with Brooklyn.

Great news!! With the Nets coming up for sale soon, they won't be able to sign anyone for at least a couple years even if Young and Lopez both opt out. Assuming Lopez does as well, I hope they both sign elsewhere. It'll be best for their careers and since Brooklyn is so ham-strung right now, they would almost surely be a top 7 or 8 lottery team.

T.Young would be a big loss for Brooklyn. He was key to their defense last year.

They are already over the cap.

They have full Bird rights that transferred via trade, so they could give him the max if they wanted to.

There is strong motivation to get under the luxury tax threshold to avoid paying the repeater luxury tax.

Thanks for sharing. I'd love to pick up Young as I think he'd be a great addition to our lineup. Can play him either at the 3 or the 4.

I've always liked Young, but not interested in spending on him. Rather wait things out until a better opportunity comes.

thats too bad. I wouldnt be surprised to see them resign him and Brook. I think that would keep the 2016 picks outside the top 10. However it would also ensure that the 17 and 18 picks would be inside the top 20 as I dont think any team devoting the necessary 30 million to those 2 players will be contenders without a star on a rookie contract.

Interesting.  Young stated earlier that he would wait to see what Brook does before deciding on whether to opt out or not.  I can't find the specific article that has a quote from him where he said this.  Here's an alternate one though:

Quote
The factors: Young made no secret of the impending cap spike playing a major role in his decision. “(My agent and I) were talking, and he was like, ‘whatever decision you make we’re gonna make it work, but just know there’s going to be a lot of money being tossed around.’ I’m coming off a decent contract, so right now I want to just be able to win basketball games and make it as far as possible. But a lot of those things do factor in with the rise in salary cap, a little bit this year and a lot next year.”

Young also cited his family, whether or not Brook Lopez returns, and the drives from New Jersey to Brooklyn, saying he might move to Brooklyn next season if he stays. “Those drives, man, they kill me,” Young said.

So hopefully this means Brook is on his way out too.

Billy King seems confident that he'll be able to retain both, though.

http://www.newsday.com/sports/basketball/nets/nets-gm-billy-king-confident-brook-lopez-thaddeus-yound-will-return-1.10569190

Quote
"I'm pretty confident," King said. "We have some tools in our favor to keep them."

Asked if that's because the Nets hold the "Bird Rights" of each player, which allows them to pay more than any other team can offer, King played coy.

"We have some tools in our favor," he said.

Young was scheduled to pocket $10.2 million in the final year of his deal and had until June 30 to opt out. Lopez, who also must make a decision by that date, is due to collect $16.7 million next season. The expectation is that he'll also opt out, given the attention he would command on the open market after turning in an impressive, relatively healthy 2014-15 season.

Lopez recently was spotted hoisting jumpers at the Nets' facility, and although that could be viewed as a sign that he will re-sign, nothing is ever set in stone in the tricky free-agency game.

King said he doesn't have any real indication which way Lopez is leaning.

"Nah, nah. Not really," he said. "He's been around. He's been working out. So that's always a plus. He's been here in the gym, so it's always good when guys are working out, if they are going to be free agents or not. You like to have them in your gym. If they are not around, you get more nervous."

Lopez has been trade bait for the last few seasons and came close to getting dealt at the deadline in February. Now he holds all the cards for the first time and can make the Nets sweat.

King isn't worried, however, about Lopez harboring any ill feelings.

"Not really," said King, who wouldn't respond when asked if he believes Lopez is a max-contract player. "I think throughout the process, I've been pretty transparent with Brook my five years being here with him. So I am not that concerned about that."

King said the Nets can't begin negotiating new contracts with Lopez and Young until free agency begins at 12:01 a.m. on July 1.

They have projected possible scenarios and sequences to be fully prepared for how things shake out when that window fully opens. Still, the Nets' roster construction in yet another important offseason for them hinges on what happens with Lopez and Young.

"I've had conversations with Brook and Thaddeus and [know] what they like," King said. "I know them as people. I've known Thaddeus, I drafted him in Philadelphia. So I do know what he [is like] as a person, what he looks for. Throughout the year, we talked about style of play, things that they are looking for. Same thing with Brook, having been here with him for now five years.

" . . . The financial part, that part will always take care of itself."

Here's to hoping that Brooklyn has the most miserable off-season possible.
