Anyone else cringe watching Olynk play D?

I wonder how many now complaining about the play of young players are the same one who wanted to get rid of all the experienced players and tank.  My Mom always said "be careful what you wish for."  Young players are not finished products.  It may take a couple years to  find out which players are even going to stick in the NBA at all.  "Potential" and "unknown" are very similar.  Fortune telling impossible...one can only hope.   When you play college age players, you get college/jr. college level basketball.

Athletic potential is not the end all but it is largely determined by the time a player gets to the NBA.   KO will always be slow of foot and to react on D.  Skills develop, but you usually know whether a guy is athletic by the time he gets to the big time.   Some guys have it all in high school and are considered good athletes, lose the edge some more in college because most guys are bigger and more athletic and even more in the pros as most everyone is athletic and big.  I would wager, most guys on the board, probably have not played past high school.   But it is the way it is, there is a difference between the different divisions too of college in the quality of athletes they attract.   That being said there are good athletes at all levels though.

Everything he is doing is measured and  in slow motion -he has to think not re act-he's not leaving his feet where he used to-he is out there but not carefree----this is a 7ft guy running on a bad ankle and just coming back-he still doesn't trust it-

 

He was off for weeks, excuses are like you know what.   It is what it is, and it isn't all bad but it is not all good either.  He was slow before in the injury what is your excuse for that?  Guys made all kinds of excuses for Sully too, and a lot of it is his lack of professional work ethic.   I do not see that in KO.   I think he tries, he is just limited in some ways.    So was Bird, but he had more talent in other areas to compensate.   The kid can play when he is confident.   When he does not have it, not so much.   I think he is his own worst enemy.

I was at the Sixer game the other night and focused on him a lot. I know he had a horrific game (at one point in the 4th he had 1 pt and 3 fouls accrued).

He wasn't moving towards loose balls at all and looked very tentative physically.

At what point was he ever passable on defense? Every game I've seen him in, the other team plays like he's not even there.

Well the bolded two are objectively false. I disagree with him looking lost also. Well I mean sure, he misses shots, but what are you even saying here? Olynyk is the only player I can think of where people love to ignore FG% and TS% because their eyes are telling them he is missing a lot of shots, even though he had a 50% FG (and very good TS%) before his injury. Maybe you guys are the ones putting a magnifying glass on his mistakes?

I agree the high-lighted statements are inaccurate IMO. He does fall down too much, and he looks lost a lot of the time. Oh, and I think the hair is not flattering, but he must like it.

What bothers me is his confidence is so obviously up and down during the game. When it's down...he looks terrible. When it's up, you think he's turning the corner.

Well that didn't go well, let me sum it up this way, on defensive rating our team goes, Datome, Jerebko, Pressey, Wright, Prince, Bradley, Bass and then Olynyk for team leaders.  I know you think he is terrible but somehow, and this isn't over a small sample size like Datome and Jerebko, he is one of our best defenders.  Either that or he has been incredibly lucky this year and will probably win the lottery any day now.

Our team's net rating goes Datome, Jerebko, Prince, Thomas, and Olynyk for our leaders.  What do the four guys ahead of Olynyk have in common?  Small sample size.  We just play better offensively and yes, defensively with Olynyk out there.

That was the exact topic of conversation that my family and I had with the group next to us. We all felt the same way: KO shouldn't be playing.

What a jumble of numbers! But as to your summary--I'd have KO, IT and JJ start--along with Smart and Crowder--once this team is all healthy and together.

Yeah I saw that, so I summed it up in a modify.  Probably should have erased it but you can easily see the names in order.  In fact, NBA stats.com and anyone can just look the stats up themselves and see.

Anyway, statistically over a long stretch we are better off with Olynyk on the floor both offensively and defensively.

The free throws were annoying, but he did score 20 points on 7/13 shooting today.
