I know there has been much debate on whether KG should go in the rafters with Celtic greats.

The question now is with his return to the Wolves and the love fest over there, does he seem more like a rental now. And if so, does that tilt the decision against putting him in the rafters?

It is very interesting. I didn't know KG was that in love with MN. Is he, or does he just see the opportunity to buy the team so he is saying all the right things?

Does KG go in the Garden rafters given the renewed love fest with MN?

Yes - He changed the culture of an entire franchise and brought them a title.  KG will always be associated with Boston.  He is an all time great and a all-time great Celtic.  I think if you got KG one on one, he would tell you he is a Celtic.  Him and Pierce will go up together...

Danny ainge said it was likely to be retired. Wyc in 2013 said he can't imagine the jersey not be retired.

Him going back to the Twolves doesn't change anything.  He probably would have played the rest of his career here if given the opportunity.

Yes...yes...yes.

He made the single biggest impact on the Celtics organization of anyone since Bird retired.  Pierce was the captain and best player they've had since Bird but KG was the one who change the culture of the team and was a vital piece of a championship team as well as a contending team for another handful of seasons after that.

Anybody who was on board with this team during the Pitino days as well as the early to mid 2000s knows how much of a 180 turn this team made in '07-08 & beyond.

I think he was bound to be going into the rafters before.

As I've consistently said in these threads, I don't think he played here long enough to get his number retired, but that he probably would.

Thought about starting this sort of thread, too, so TP to you.

I wish we had a secondary type of recognition, like a ring of honor or something, so retiring numbers wasn't the only way to honor important figures.

If everything goes like it looks like it will with KG returning to Minny, and loving being home and a Wolf again so hard, I don't really feel the need to see his number retired here. I appreciate everything he has done, but he doesn't feel like a Celtic anymore. I'm sure he could change my mind, but it would take some sort of gesture or statement along the lines of him thinking of himself as a Celtic, but that is something he can't really do anymore. I think I would wait until he hall speech, and after he becomes owner of the TWolves, see how he thinks of us then.

I want a players numbers who go into the rafters to be undeniably Celtics, and I don't think its clear that KG is.

Just some background details for this discussion:

KG played 6 seasons in Boston.

Others who have had their number retired who played for a similar span of seasons:

Dennis Johnson (7 seasons)
Ed Macauley (6 seasons)
Cedric Maxwell (8 seasons)
Reggie Lewis (6 seasons)

This.

There was a statistic where the Celtics in 06-07, had the highest turnaround in a season change in 07-08.

Garnett was a huge reason for our success. He changed the culture, brought heart and soul/grit into a team full of young players with potential.

I'm glad Garnett, Pierce, and Allen came to BOS. The identity of our culture and Celtics at the time had changed drastically for the better.

The stat, by the way, is the largest single-season increase in win total. We went from 24 wins to 66 for a gain of 42.
