I think the title alone and five good years deserves a spot in the rafters.

Yup .....he gave the Celtics back their LOST identity rom the golden eras. After he retires from Basketball.

KG reminded the Celtics nation about bleeding green.

Just some background details for this discussion:

KG played 6 seasons in Boston.

Others who have had their number retired who played for a similar span of seasons:

Dennis Johnson (7 seasons)
Ed Macauley (6 seasons)
Cedric Maxwell (8 seasons)
Reggie Lewis (6 seasons)
And frankly those guys probably shouldn't have their number retired except Lewis who is up there after so few seasons only because of his death (he would have earned a spot up there had he not passed away).

The Celtics have way too many numbers retired.  It is quite silly really.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

As I've consistently said in these threads, I don't think he played here long enough to get his number retired, but that he probably would.
i agree completely. but if they put #5 up in the rafters i won't squawk either.
Yeah he didn't play long but I guess he changed things in that time more than any player changes a team.

Agreed.  Personally, I don't think any of them should have had their numbers retired.
Before a game on Christmas against the Pacers, Bird told Chuck Person that he had a present for him. During the game, Bird shot a 3-pointer in front of Person. Immediately after releasing the ball, Bird said to Person, "Merry F!#*ing Christmas!" and then the shot went in.

Danny ainge said it was likely to be retired. Wyc in 2013 said he can't imagine the jersey not be retired.

Just received a text from a friend saying how much he missed KG. I never thought I'd miss anyone more than Pierce but it's true. The passion, grit, heart, and competitiveness is not only a teachable skill, it's a rarity.
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

Ppl, the man has earned north of $300M+ dollars. That's an extraordinary career payoff for a professional athlete. And unlike a lot of other players, he seemed to have a bunch of no trade clauses, which not everyone is privy to.

If he'd come back to the C's for Vet's minimum, and helped the new squad as a senior advisor, perhaps eighth man off the bench, then yes, he's a Celtic for life.

I mean the other Celtic greats, Russell, Heinsohn, Cousy, JoJo, Hondo, etc, orbit the Garden in some way, shape, or form. The big exception here would be Bird but that's because the el cheapo owner ditched him for Pitino. And others, like McHale, went back to their home state, which is understandable because there's no place like home. You could say the same for Bird but for him, that was his 2nd choice for an NBA front office career.

KG, however, is just following the money.

He shouldn't. But considering the way the Celtics as an organization retire numbers he just might get 5 retired. Oh don't think he accumulated enough time. The championship was nice but he played here for 5 seasons.

Yes.

Can't think of a reason why it wouldn't.

He single handedly changed the culture and fortunes of the Celts in one season.

The situation kind of bums me out. Garnett is doing exactly what he's doing in Minn. that he could have been doing in Boston. Heck, the Celtics probably could have absorbed him with a TE and only given up a 2nd rounder.

And that's a big part of my point, KG is not integral to the cohesion of Boston's franchise. In retrospect, he was a hired gun(+) for those years. Ppl act like he was earning small change, in reality, he's one of the most highly paid players in sports.

Personally, if I were an extraordinarily gifted player ... as soon as I hit $250M in NBA salaries, I would have left my contract and joined the C's for Vet's minimum. Here's why ... I'm a lifelong Celtics fan, and as such, my dividends from utility/tobacco/energy/technology stocks & annuities would have given me a residual income of $1M-$15M, doing absolutely nothing all day long.

Knowing that I'd never have to work a day in my life, I'd direct all my attention ... on making the Celtics the greatest team of all time. Sorry, but I don't see that in Garnett. For a period of time, he was cuddled by Bill Russell and made to feel important to the franchise but in the end, he's just like everyone else, looking for a big payday.

Yeah really. I wish we had traded for him. He'll probably never leave Minnesota now. Before the trade though we could have had him at the deadline or in the summer.

If we let KG in, what about Ray? If either one would come back for even a half season, they should get in.

Absolutely.

Changed the Culture here.

Changed everything.

Wiped away years of crap and garbage that was this franchise after Bird and McHale left.

He was a phenomenal Celtic. He made me proud to be a Celtic fan.

Celtics should be ashamed if they do not retire his number.
