Pass first vs score first mentality pg

We will finally get to see which kind of pg works better with this group/CBS system

It's no contest if it's pre 2014 Rondo. But his game has been brutal lately. It's really hard to watch as a big Rondo fan. I think if he doesn't fix his jump shot, he might be looking at the exit door soon.

So right now, I'm taking Thomas. And I don't even think it's close or debatable. That's how bad Rondo's game is right now.

Rondo at his best is no doubt much better than IT will ever be.

Right now, IT is better overall and it's not close.  The only thing is that if Rondo was on a team with 4 really good players that could all shoot, he'd be better on that specific team than IT would be.

Rondo if he gets back to doing what he did. Going to the hoop, defending, rebounding, passing.

Right now Rondo is having a hard time.

IT may have a tough time on a new team too. It's hard to say

Rondo, with his shooting is like a pitcher that can't throw the ball over the plate anymore. It's mental but it's also true. Players are daring him to shoot as they defend him, getting into his head. He plays the game trying not to have to shoot the ball or even get fouled, so he still doesn't have to shoot it.
I'm sure the coaches are telling him to shoot when he's open.

Being a free agent, this is a bad time to have doubts about your shooting ability, and have the league be aware of it.

Rondo in 2010 was a much better PG than Thomas.

It's actually not. It's just hard for you to say.

To be fair to Rondo, JAson Kidd also struggled mightily when he was dealt to dallas.  They were in the same position and went .500 for the rest of the year.  It took an entire offseason for the team to adjust to him. Rondo is that much of an enigma where he plays his own style.

I think Thomas is a player who can put up numbers regardless. His game is as a scorer. He's not trying to control the other 4 players around him.

He's going to put up points here because he can create his own shot which is good because that's what we need.

Agree that Rondo at his best is a better player - he has a proven record in end of season games. Not sure if IT has shown his best yet though, he could be more adaptable than many think. This comparison was always going to be made, it will be interesting to see if time changes any opinions.

Hard to say ,  have to see.....I was a fan of old Rondo the rookie kid.

Rondo left with being a diva , not playing hard , the moments he choose to exert himself for the team or show off .....the Celtics looked promising .

Rondo was not a sincere person in the end .   He played his team wrong .....not a fan of him so much anymore.

Thomas should with out a doubt be better than the ungrateful diva Danny traded off quick as possible.

Hopefully Thomas can sink game winning free throws and BE a guard you want in the game the last five minutes,

Rondo not being a closer , with poor free throw shooting is a major bad deal. ......worrying about your starting point guard being hack a shaqed. Is just crazy.

So for this type of team Thomas should make a bigger impact.

Rondo is the better PG...when he doesn't have the "yips". But he does. He's the basketball equivalent of Chuck Knoblauch, Rick Ankiel and Micky Sasser. He simply can't execute anymore and it all seems to be in his head.

It's impacting the rest of his game. He doesn't drive the lane anymore because he know he can't shoot the free throws. Last year - even coming off an injury - he shot a free throw every 15 minutes of game time. The year before it was once every 10 minutes. This year it's once every 25 minutes. That means he's not penetrating. That means he's not being aggressive.

So be it. I hope he figures it out.
Jaylen Brown will be an All Star in the next 5 years.

Interesting shot at Rondo here by Ainge, in discussing Thomas:

"Even though he’s little, he’s a very good scorer, one of the best scorers in the paint with little floating shots, and so forth. He’s also a good 3-point shooter. I think Isaiah is better than anybody we have or have had in a while at scoring or creating offense in the pick-and-roll."

the playoffs/winning rondo (the playing defense rondo) we had before danny blew it up, is hands down better than thomas

but considering CBS system, i think a score first PG is better suited
the system emphasizes ball movement and passing from all the players kind of like the spurs or hawks
thomas should get easy open shots being a more versatile scorer than rondo (some that rondo would not get e.g. 3 point shot/long 2s)

while rondo being pass first would usually require the ball and in some plays halt ball movement in order for him to setup the guys and get his assist

Danny is right. If isaiah adds what he can without making our team worse, we will be make 8th

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
People are being a little short-sighted. If we are talking equal contracts (and I know we aren't), I take Rondo all day. I get that he is having a difficult time adjusting to Dallas, but before he was dealt he was putting up nearly triple double averages. Maybe I am 'old-school' in not caring if my PG is the best scorer in the world, but even still, Rondo is clearly the better of the two and has the track record to prove it.

If he wanted to come back to Boston this off-season for $12M a year, I wouldn't hesitate to find a new destination for Thomas, even if it was just a pure salary dump.
