It's a descriptive name for a player who prevents the other team from scoring close to the basket. There are statistics that monitor how good a player is at this, it's a real thing in the same way the the term "3 point shooter" is a real thing.

WCS in the draft!

I agree,

The standard PG,SG,SF,PF and C or 1,2,3,4,5 are only a very basic description of basketball positions. At any level but particularly the NBA other positions / roles have developed.

To list a few

Stretch 4
3+D wing
Rim protector
Combo Guard
face up 4

"rim protector" is currently a hot term because the Cs lack a great one.

Its not just hot because the C's don't have one.

NBA analysts, articles, and broadcasters are using it a ton lately. I think the Sloan conference paper on them along with player tracking data have spurred its popularity.

1. It is two words, be prepared to be mocked for titleage.

You could even call it a phrase.

Also, one of the most prominent rim protectors of all time is also the most successful Celtic of all time. So, uh, the mystery is solved?

TP
exactly what i was going to say!

One word or two, we need one.  Have we ever won a championship without a defensive presence under the rim?
a defensive presence and a rim protector are not the same thing
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

It's just a word... like "upside"

It's a word that allows you to shorten a long description.

right, a rim protector may not be able to play team defense. We need both please, if possible.
