I know, I know, it's "sauces"...

Still:

Sources: Indy, Bos, Hou, Den all interested in Reggie Jackson. No guarantee OKC will trade him. They won't give him away.

Danny is in on every point guard potentially available. He clearly doesn't see Smart as a point guard, and must have felt Rondo's best days are behind him and/or has too many flaws to invest in long term

I would give up our pick this year to get his restricted free agent rights.

I wonder what they want for him.

You'd give up a lottery pick for Jackson?  :o

No, Danny's always viewed guards like himself.  Dual.  Can play both PG and SG, and can co-exist with any other player on the court.  In Smart's situation, he can also play the SF position at times based on his ability to guard from that spot.

We probably make the playoffs with him but I would put a top 3 pick protection on it. Just in case.

Never know which rumors are true, but with all the chatter around Lawson, Dragic, and now Jackson, it really looks like Danny is shopping hard for a PG.  Which implies we don't think Smart is ready to play full-time PG, at least not now and possibly not ever.

I still think the most likely outcome is that we don't get any of those guys, but it seems pretty informative on what the front office thinks about the current backcourt.

EDIT: Hpantazo more or less beat me to this point I see.

Ainge is in on every trade rumor this week. Either as a buyer or a facilitator.

Yeah that's another takeaway - regardless of the specific players or role we play, Danny is looking to make moves.

Of course with this many assets he'd be foolish to not try and make moves at every opportunity for the next 2-3 years.

I don't see why Smart couldn't share the court with another distributor. He can very easily defend the 2 (or the 3 for that matter) and he already shares playmaking duties with Turner. (If anything, a good PG coming in would obsolete Turner, not Smart.)

I think Danny is looking for a particular set of skills as opposed to a point guard in specific. We need a go-to scorer that can also penetrate the lane and any of Lawson/Dragic/Jackson would provide that for us.

The fact that they're nominally "point guards" is less important than the fact that they fulfill a need.

Great words from a great man

Would we?

I don't think guard play is our issue. Furthermore his brand of guard play doesn't exactly open up new strengths for our team.

I think we just need more ball handlers on this team. I'm not sure it's a negative on Smart. We just don't have many guys who can get into the lane and score.

Oh I agree, it doesn't have to be a negative, we could see him as a great 2 guard/combo guard for the future, just not a fulltime PG.  We figured out Bradley couldn't play PG last year but resigned him anyway, and he doesn't have nearly the upside of Smart.

Or, it could mean that he likes the 2 guard offense like Bledsoe/Dragic.
Or it could mean that he's going to deal Bradley and use Smart primarily as SG.
Or, it could mean that he is trying to improve his team by having more than 1 quality PG and doesn't want to have Pressey/Turner as the primary backup.
Or, he could be collecting assets.
Before a game on Christmas against the Pacers, Bird told Chuck Person that he had a present for him. During the game, Bird shot a 3-pointer in front of Person. Immediately after releasing the ball, Bird said to Person, "Merry F!#*ing Christmas!" and then the shot went in.

I actually think he doesn't want to trade Smart bc he sees him as a SG first and PG second. I think he could play well along with Reggie Jackson OR Dragic.  I think Bradley is the one who is on the out - especially on a very good contract.
