If Danny is looking to replace Bass/fill the pf spot with our 2nd 1st (early 20's) and if his choice is between these two guys, which one of these guys would you want on the team?

Portis 6-10/230 pounds/7'2 wingspan

Christmas 6-9/250 pounds/7-4 wingspan

I'm all for BPA but will be a little bummed if that BPA is a PF.

Draft: 8 first rounders in next 5 years.

Cap space: $24 mil.

I'd take Portis.  He's just about to turn 20 while Christmas is already 23.  Portis was solid as a freshman and is improved as a sophomore.  I don't trust Christmas' huge productivity jump as a senior.  From what I've seen Christmas' offense is limited to around the basket while Portis has a reasonable mid range jumper.

Portis seems more skilled and is younger.

Portis.  He's a guy I've had my eye on for a while as a target for that 2nd 2015 pick.  Has good size, and a nice skill set.

I like Portis, what about Trey Lyles though?  I think he might be a good fit for us as well and a good buy low candidate.
2019 historical draft.  Pick 12

Tim Duncan, Oscar Robertson, Elgin Baylor, Scottie Pippen, Willis Reed, Mitch Richmond, Sam Jones, Dan Majerle, Bob Cousy, Rasheed Wallace, Shawn Kemp, Marcus Camby

Does anyone know if Rakeem Christmas is related to Syracuse alum (and our former Summer-League floor general) Dionte Christmas?

EDIT: My bad, I was thinking of Kris Joseph. Seriously though, are the Christmas's related? It's not too common a name.

Lyles is a bit taller, fitter Sullinger.   Not above the rim, quick , athletic.  High iq , crafty , responsible. Pretty strong.

If he is the bpa by early 20's I'm sure Danny will take him. But he prob won't be available by the 20's and we already have Sullinger, KO as average athlete high iq big guys.

Portis seems more skilled and is younger.

Portis at times is still indecisive when he gets the ball down low. A few dribbles, nowhere to go and passes the ball.  A little turnover prone also

Portis has a nice jump shot and can dribble , stop and pop. Which is a very good thing for a big man

I think people are selling Christmas short.  Instead of declaring for the NBA he went back to school to finish his degree, put on 10 pounds of muscle and worked hard in the offseason with his footwork and back to the basket game.    He still has not reached his potential even though is 23

His stats this season is consistent and has been very hard to stop downlow. Maybe it is bc he is older and stronger than alot of his opponents.  Or maybe he is good.

No one was going to draft Christmas after his meager performance in his 1st three years at Syracuse.  He would have ended up overseas or in the D league.  I don't see much NBA potential for a short center who apparently has no offense outside the low post and whose defense is unproven.  I would not give guaranteed money to Christmas.

Portis is a young sophomore so it isn't surprising he's indecisive at times.  Portis only commits 1.3 TOs (29mpg) while Christmas commits 2.3 TOs (33mpg).

In all honesty neither.  Portis is projected as high as 13, Christmas is projected as high as 30 on NBA draft net.  Both look like projects that might pay off down the road but will not be ready to help us next year.

The projected 2nd round PF/C that I'm interested in more than Christmas is Shaun Long from Louisiana-Lafayette. He's 6' 10" so I think he could play the 4 or the 5, rebounds well, blocks some shots and has a good "stretch" offensive game.

I saw him a few times LY when I was trying to get a look at Elfrid Payton and was intrigued. I think the questions with him are about guarding NBA 4's, but I'd take a flyer in round 2.
