6. The Celtics have a gazillion trade exceptions of varying sizes.

After their flurry of deals over the last two weeks, the Celtics could absorb some extra salaries from teams looking to shed money or work complex trades. (Credit to Marc Stein, who rattled off Boston’s precise trade exception information when I bumped into him Thursday in Santa Cruz. Few people enjoy trade exception minutiae as much as Steiny.)

Boston has been calling around the league over the last week, reminding GMs that Philly isn’t the only team with salary space to rent out as we approach the February 19 trade deadline.

Good. Best thing to do right now.

Build through draft. Not for free agency. For short to medium term future. Then make bigger moves further down the road.

As long as we take on deals that expires after the 2015-16 season  i'm fine with it, add more picks, develop your youth then attract FA's with 45-50 million in cap space.

The Celtics have been calling teams in the past week

The Celtics have been calling teams in the past week and letting them know that they’re willing to take on cap-eating contracts, Lowe writes. Boston is over the cap but about $11.8MM shy of the luxury tax line this season, and the Celtics have only about $33.5MM in commitments for next season.

Hooprumors

Thanks was going to say merge thread. Sorry didnt see the other

This is where I'm at. I'm all for trying to land max FA's, but we need another year to fix the place up before we show it off. I'm greedy to the point where I want to hopefully land an all-star caliber rookie in this draft, lay low for another year and hopefully land another couple of top picks(with likely ours and Nets pick). Then, land a couple of max FA's and ring chasers while having Smart,Young, a top 5 '15 pick, two top 5 '16 picks. A ridiculous situation where we're a contender and are loaded with potential stars.

Crazy, but possible.

Think we have to be realistic about getting a deal as sweet as the Cavs deal that included a 1st AND Zeller.

Are there any good examples of this happening in the past?

Just want to kind of gauge the possible impact.

Let's get another '17 1st. I mean, one 1st currently in the '17 draft??? That's weak.

Who could be out there looking for someone to eat money?

IIRC, the Sonics rented their cap space out to the Suns to take on Kurt Thomas, and got two 1st round picks for it.

They then turned around and traded Thomas to the Spurs for another 1st rounder the following season.

First round picks were handed out like candy in those days, you could buy one for about 3 million dollars, if not less.

Yeah. Those days are gone, my friend. We thought they'd never end.

While I've generally advocated that strategy too, Danny's done such a bang-up job of keeping the books clear for next summer I no longer support that move, unless the return is really high.  We're getting very close to having the room for two max free agents (if the salary cap rises a lot in advance of the TV deal, as the NBA wants, we might be already there).  Combine that with using Wallace's expiring and some of our many picks, and we could add three stars (or budding stars) next summer.  If the free agents don't materialize, cap space can always be used at that point for Thornton/Zeller type trades.

I dunno... we got a 1st rounder for Rondo and a 1st rounder for Green... both guys who are unrestricted free agents this summer and could theoretically come right back to Boston.

Still seems like people are giving them away like Candy.  I wouldn't have given up a 1st for either of those rentals.  Neither was worth it.

Expect Ainge to call up at least 3 teams; the Pelicans, Nuggets, & Warriors. Eric Gordon, JaVale McGee, Danillo Gallinari, & David Lee each have 2 years left on their contracts (1 after this year) and could likely be acquired using some of our players on expiring contracts (Bass, Thornton). Golden State might be willing to offer a future 1st (which is bound to be late in the lottery) and Lee for expirings and possibly a 2nd rounder or two. Cs could then flip David Lee for another asset when his contract is set to expire. These are the types of players that have contracts Ainge may be willing to trade for. He will be looking for more compensation in the form of future draft picks.
