Maybe it's a case by case basis, but J.R Smith only got 5 games when he was suspended at the beginning of last year. Does the ten game suspension indicate it's something else(not marijuana)?

Violation #3 gets you 5 games, which Sanders served to start the year.  Violation 4 gets you 10, #5 gets you 15, and so forth.  This is marijuana only.  Harder drugs are treated much more harshly.

You can get caught using pot for the 5th time and only be suspended for 14 games? That's a triple life sentence in baseball. I guess it's good that they differentiate between marijuana and harder drugs, because they should.

not an idiot, or at least not one based solely upon this choice. he simply values smoking marijuana over playing in the nba. he has money, i understand that his values simply don't match those of others.

of course, there is also the possibility that he is both a possessor different values AND an idiot. i know many such people.

Eh, he already doesn't care much about playing basketball - it sounds as though he is just going to do whatever he wants to do and deal with the consequences...he can keep collecting a paycheck until somebody tells him he can't play anymore and that is smarter than just quitting basketball one year into your first mega-deal.
