The Celtics are getting a lot of interest in guard Marcus Thornton, but teams are concerned about his $8.6 million salary, a source said.

Will Danny pay some salary for a better deal?

Makes sense. All playoffs teams would like the security blanket of some instant offense off the bench. It's finding a trade fit that's the bigger issue, considering the Cs won't take back salary.

The Blazers are the first team that comes to mind for me.

He may end up on the Cs throughout the rest of the season and the Cs may let his contract expire, but he won't be bought out.
Jaylen Brown will be an All Star in the next 5 years.

Cant we give a team $1 million as part of a deal to help pay his salary?  Didn't we get cash in the Jeff Green deal?

Landry Fields and Greg Stiemsma gets the deal done with Toronto. Fields is barely playing at all for them, logged 0 minutes the last 2 games.

Probably tough to find a contending team that has $6-7 million in expiring contracts of players who aren't producing to match up with Thornton.  If you've got that much salary tied up in deadweight roster space, you're probably not contending.

Not saying there aren't 1-2 teams out there, but Thornton is tough to match if Ainge won't take back future salaries.

LOL about "concern" about his salary. How concerned can you really be about an expiring contract halfway through the season? Posturing.

You either can make a deal work per the CBA, or you can't.

To me the two teams that make sense are Portland and Toronto. Portland in particular seems to lack a scoring spark. Toronto I can't believe didn't offer Field and a 2nd for Prince.

I think that's the concern.

Portland has the contracts to do something for Bass or Thornton.  Do they have the motivation though?

I read this quote as teams have interest but they are going to wait until he is bought out.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
This seems like a captain obvious report by Spears. The Cavs were so concerned about Thornton's money that they gave up a promising young center and a first round pick just to get rid of him. I would think the Cs would be willing to send as much cash as is allowed in a trade since they would probably just buy Thornton out anyway, but I imagine the bigger problem is matching salaries and roster spots. An injured player and a 2nd would get this done.

That trade works in the trade machine and makes sense.  It's basically dead weight with guys that hardly play for a legit rotation player in Thornton. You could argue Thornton is better than Bradley at times, and a big reason the Nets won a playoff series last year.  Maybe we an get a protected first than buy out at least 1 if not both players in return.

There's always the Thomas Robinson / Meyers Leonard possibility (plus salary).

It really is too bad that the Knicks aren't better this year. We could have given them Bass, Thornton, and whoever else for that humongous Stoudemire expiring.
