Was Pierce not a sf because he had ball handling issues early in his career? He was more a pf according to your logic. I think Smart is going to be a pg but he might be a paul pierce pg where he can play both positions and is a combo guard. He's a basketball player and a good one. He needs to be on the floor regardless and play a big role. Otherwise what are we doing. If we trade Smart and go some completely other direction when Smart is defense and toughness and what we are trying to establish in ways I don't know.
Smart has been pretty efficient so far early in his career. He's had some issues carrying the ball for long stretches but he is developing that.
Smart could be a bench player that plays multiple positions where we have a guy like Turner or whoever who plays the point at times. But I still feel like Smart is going to step into a set role at some point. Most likely as a starter. If we have players that can handle and share the ball that's the key.
Rondo had Pierce, KG, and Ray who could all offset some of rondo's deficiencies. That's what I think will happen with Smart ultimately.
If any player is a catalyst for our youth and rebuild it has to be Smart imo.
Pierce moved around quite a bit early in his career. Played SG, then SF, and PF at times. I think Smart isn' t going to take that long and neither is this rebuild. I don't think DA's intent is for this rebuild to take up 10 years of Smart's career.
We didn't trade Rondo to get some other pg either. It's not so we can trade Smart and get Jimmy Butler either and go with Turner and Pressey. Smart has to be a pg. He's got to be that guy who sets the tone on this team. I expect us to get a Center who sets the tone as well. But it's Smart as our leader and that.
