... I'm more excited about James Young than Marcus Smart.  19 year old kid with proper size who can shoot?... I'm in.   Nice to have hope.  I give his performance tonight two thumbs and a Gerald Green nub up.

Me too, but he has a ways to go on Defense, just as Smart has a way to go on offense.

I'd recon he's got a good chance at being far more than Korver and an outside chance at being the go to scorer building block of the celtics future.

I remember Ainge or Stevens saying that they thought James Young had a good frame and would bulk up to around 230-235lbs in a few years time. At 6-7 with a 7-0 wingspan, that should make him plenty big enough to play the SF position.

I think he is pretty similar to how Pierce came into the league as a two and then moved to the 3 once he put on weight.

Yeah, though if anything the bigger 3's have got a little bigger since then, so a full-time transition to the 3 may take longer than it did for Pierce.

I'm with you on the second part, but I think you are guilty of under-rating Korver. He's the #1 outside weapon in the league right now. That is no human's worst case scenario.

Korver is a career .430 three-point shooter, and he's currently shooting .510 on 5+ attempts per game. Young would do well if he becomes half the player Kyle Korver is right now.

Yeah, I'll be thrilled if Young even comes close to reaching Korver's status.  A guy who has to be covered tightly on every possession opens up a lot of options for the rest of the offense.

There have been plenty of guys with nice form who couldn't perform well in the NBA, though. 

"Elite", to me, means proven top-tier results.  Young may or may not project to be at that level, but he's far from proven it.

I mean, he only hit 34.9% of his threes at the college level last year, and 33.6% in conference play.  That's far from elite, and it's with a closer 3PT line.

Yeah. And he's not just the #1 outside weapon in the league, you can make a case that he's on pace to be the best threat ever. Consider:

(1) Korver is currently on pace to break the all-time NBA single-season record for TS% - and the current top 15 there is populated almost completely by centers who did nothing but dunk (Chandler, Gilmore, Chamberlain, Dawkins etc.).

(2) He's also challenging for the all-time single-season 3PT% record, which he already holds, but he's doing it this year at 3 times the shooting volume of his own prior record (5.7 attempts vs 2.1). Indeed, no one else in the top 10 all-time got there by shooting more than 3.1 attempts per game. Most were shooting 1 or 2 threes per game in limited roles coming off the bench. (No one else in the top 10 was a starter except Schrempf, who shot <1 three per game and during the brief 94-96 period when the line was moved in).

I'm not disagreeing with you that he might not be an elite scorer but he has shown signs of being an elite shooter. It's hard to ignore how natural his shot looks.

Avery Bradley could practice another 10 years and his shot wouldn't look as good as young's.
