  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
As a Celtic rookie playing 9 years, arguably the greatest point guard of the modern era for the C's.
Should his number be hanging in the rafters?

*Celtics All Time #1 in Assists per game
*Celtics All Time #1 Steals per game

*Celtics 3rd in All time steals total
*Celtics 4th in All time assists total

4× NBA All-Star (2010–2013)
2× NBA All-Defensive First Team (2010, 2011)
2× NBA All-Defensive Second Team (2009, 2012)
2× NBA assists leader (2012, 2013)
NBA steals leader (2010)
All-NBA Third Team (2012)
NBA All-Rookie Second Team (2007)
NBA champion (2008)

It's a definite yes from me.

"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Pierce is up there for sure. KG is probably up there, and Allen has a chance of being up there. I'd put Rondo somewhere around KG's chance of being up there, though I think KG deserves it more than Rondo.

Part of me thinks he hasn't done enough.

But if we're going on with these standards that Cedric Maxwell's were retired, we should hang Rondo's as well.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
At first thought, I would say no - he was not here quite long enough and was never the official leader of successful Cs teams (it's impossible to ignore KG and Pierce even though 'playoff Rondo' certainly came to play). I often like to use Antoine Walker as a comparison. He spent almost eight years in Boston, made three all-star teams and was the undisputed co-leader of some very good teams. I think there are very few people who would make the claim that Walker deserves to have his number hanging in the rafters (and Jeff Green may get confused).

However, I will say that you make a good argument. With his Cs all-time rankings and the fact that he won a championship (albeit as the 4th-6th best player), it may put him over the top. Also, as Yoki said, if Maxwell is the benchmark, then he almost has to have his number retired.

we already have too many retired numbers, we need to tighten up the criteria.

No.
And a BIG NO to Allen.  That would be ridiculous.
KG is a tough one.
Before a game on Christmas against the Pacers, Bird told Chuck Person that he had a present for him. During the game, Bird shot a 3-pointer in front of Person. Immediately after releasing the ball, Bird said to Person, "Merry F!#*ing Christmas!" and then the shot went in.

Agreed.  The C's retire everyone.

No.  His legacy is slightly better than Antoine walker and Antoine didn't get his number retired either.

I think yes, and its the same reason I think yes to KG. Mainly without Rondo, 2007-2011 would have been much different. He was arguably the best player on the team for 2, maybe 3 of those seasons.

For those who think KG should go up and not Rondo, please tell me why.

For me, there's only on sure fire player from this generation that is getting their number retired by the C's: Paul Pierce.

KG is a maybe. His impact was truly transcendent for the franchise but I feel like he didn't accrue enough  time here.

Allen- just no.

Rondo- has the time but no where near their impact of Pierce or KG.

All that being said, the C's have retired numbers of Maxwell, DJ, Ainge, etc. Their criteria for retiring numbers flat out stinks. It makes it almost worthless with the amount of numbers of "good but not great" players they have retired.

I'm not convinced that KG should have his number retired.  6 years as a Celtic with 1 Championship.  Based on the C's history with retiring numbers, I expect that they will retire KG's, but I wouldn't.

Pierce for sure. KG maybe- stayed for only a few years, but he was a true Celtic.
Rondo left on his on own volition and he is nowhere close to the greatness of the previous two.
