http://www.celticsblog.com/2014/12/29/7460141/the-potentially-increasing-value-of-the-brooklyn-nets-picks

Just wanted to add my 2 cents to this article by Jeff Clark.

The current state of the East should also help next years nets pick.

Unless somthing crazy happens Toronto, ATL, Wash, Chicago and Cleveland will be locks for the playoffs this year and next. Thats 5 of 8 spots. The With the return of George Indy will be a playoff lock. Thats 6 of 8. If Miami holds its course they should still be a playoff team. Thats 7 of 8.

Now that leaves 1 playoff spot for alot of improving teams to fight over with the Nets. The Knicks seem hell bent on spending $$ to get Melo back into the playoffs. The Pistons already seem better post J Smith, if they retain Monroe and add a starting SF they should be in the mix. The Bobcats want to win that enough is a good thing. Orlando is growing a team and I expect them to join the  Cs in a similare "young but competitive" stage next year. Phili will still suck. Add to this mix in the east an aging declining Nets team and we could be looking at a very nice pick.

Speaking of Nets picks any one know if the swap can be for any 1st C's have or does it have to be only the C's actual pick?
Example if we own rights to Bucks 2017 pick but it's 23 overall. C's own pick is 10. Nets pick is 12. Can we swap the Bucks pick we own for the Nets? We obviously would not think of swap our 10 for 12.

Reason I ask this is because if we are worse than nets that year the swap option could be worthless.

The article forgot to mention that potential playoff reformatting would make it more difficult for mediocre Eastern teams to make the playoffs. While it's still in the discussion stage right now the continued dominance of the West might force the league's hand. I would hold onto the picks for that reason. It's very easy to see this Brooklyn team not being able to be one of the top 16 teams record wise next year. 2018? Who knows?

I want the Nets in the playoffs this year, because that pick goes to the hawks.  If they somehow got okafor or something ridiculous like that it would be scary.

The Nets will be lucky to make the playoffs this year. They are going to be even worse next year. They will not have acccess to their own pick until 2018, unless they can bring in a superstar they are going to be screwed until the end of the decade.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Plumlee has been beasting for them and Lopez is back in limited minutes.  Joe Johnson is having a really nice season.   They still have the talent to make the playoffs this year.  It's not a guarantee to be a lotto pick next year.

I think so too.  wording on several sites posting draft pick transaction mention that C's can swap "their' pick with the Nets.  could be just the wording used since the C's don't have another pick at this time.

It's without a doubt the C's original pick only and no one else's traded-for pick.

The Brooklyn picks COULD very well be the feather in the cap for Danny Ainge in this rebuild. Just think of the ramifications that trade has had. Teams just aren't trading unprotected first round picks anymore and without looking I don't think any have changed hands since that trade went down. That team is shaping up to be a very bad team in the near future with how old and overpayed their best players are.

If even one of those 3 picks ends up in the top 5 that will be incredible. First round picks are at a premium right now. Especially ones that look to be top 20. Say what you will about the Rondo trade but Ainge robbed the Nets in that trade. And so far it just keeps looking better. We got Zeller on top of all that stuff too!

You're only allowed to trade picks you have control of at the time of the trade.  If the C's had control of multiple 2017 picks when the trade was made, they could have agreed with the Nets at the time to swap the lesser of their 2017 picks (or the greater) with the Nets.  But they didn't have a pick at the time, and if they come into a new 2017 pick in the future, they would only be able to change the terms of the deal by including that provision as part of a new deal made with the Nets.

So answer to my question is no but if the language of the deal was different there could be a chance for a swap that allows movement of non team pick. Interesting for sure.
