I'm a big fan of Rondo, and I think this trade really was a lowball offer.
But I don't think this trade moves the needle much for the C's either way. Obviously we don't get much better by this trade, but I also think we don't get worse. With Smart running the offense, Brad's system will probably flow better, the pace will probably be faster, and the perimeter defense will be better. In fact, it's even conceivable that they might see a slight uptick in win percentage with the differing pieces coming in.
If we're "tanking" the rest of this year, then we will obviously try to trade Green, Bass, and Thornton. However, this late in the game we need to lose as many as possible to have any decent shot at a game-changing franchise player. But all reports have us "being patient" with other trades trying to get the best possible value out of our guys.
So this Rondo trade is a little perplexing to me. His absence won't make us lose many more games, and waiting to trade our other vets only makes our chances in the lottery that much worse.
Am I off-base here, or are others similarly perplexed?
