What I Would Look for in a Jeff Green Replacement

I don't think the Celtics need to re-sign Green if he opts out.  I don't think the Celtics need to trade him.  Move him if you can get a return worth more, keep him if you can't.  But if you do trade Green and either bring back a replacement or clear cap space to sign one next summer, here's what I want:

-At least an average defender, but preferably better.  I don't want a "go-to scorer" who is useless on defense.
-At least an equivalent three-point shooter, but preferably better.  Sorry, MKG fans, but I don't think it makes sense to have a starting SF who is 3-18 career on threes when your starting PG next season is probably going to be either Rondo or Smart, who are both sub-.300 three-point shooters.
-Can function as a secondary ball-handler.  Ideally, I'd like a guy who can sometimes play as a point forward with the second unit.  Maybe Jeff Green can still be that guy.

Is there anyone who might be available who fits what I want or is Green the best option?

To me Green is tied to Rondo.

If the Cs plan is to resign Rondo then it makes sense to do the same with Green. Give them the same length deal and look at it like we have a 2 and a 3 in need of a 1 (star). I don't think this plan will work (lead to championship contention) but I think its one option for the Cs.

If the Cs plan to move Rondo then Green shouldn't be resigned and it is in the Cs best interest to cash in on his value now. What the Cs look for in return for green will really depend on what they net in trading Rondo. if both are moved I would expect back multiple picks and at least fill in player at SF. With Young already on the team and the strength of this drafts SF I don't think a long term replacement has to come via trade.

I think the ball-handling requirement makes it difficult. There are guys who just specialize on 3 and D but the reason they aren't stars is precisely due to the fact they can't dribble/create. They're basically athletic dudes who aren't super coordinated with the ball but have size and athleticism to play D, then practiced hard enough to develop a 3-pt. shot and create a niche for themselves.

They may not fit your description exactly but obviously Draymond Green, Jimmie Butler, KJ McDaniels, and Paul Millsap are the big SF names this offseason that might be gettable. Kawhi Leonard is at the top, no way SA lets him go.

In the 2nd tier would be: DeMarre Carroll, Gerald Green, and Tobias Harris.

The other names, some interesting some not: Dorell Wright, Khris Middleton, Mike Dunleavy, Landry Fields, Alonzo Gee, Francisco Garcia, Richard Jefferson, Andrei Kirilenko, Tayshaun Prince, John Salmons, Rasual Butler (who's been playing well), Omri Casspi, Chris Copeland, Robert Covington (also playing well), Wesley Johnson, James Jones, Iman Shumpert, Lance Thomas, Jeremy Evans, Hedo Turkoglu, Shawn Marion.

Right now, I 'd lean more towards signing Green than Rondo.

How many SFs are good enough ball-handlers and passers to be a secondary ball-handler?

That is usually the job of the SG. Not the SF.

I am just wondering how big a talent pool there is if that skill-set is a necessity. Does that shrink the SF market-place too much? Put too much of a limitation on Boston's options.

If it does, next question, would it not be better to re-evaluate Avery Bradley's role at SG and bring in a SG who can handle the ball?

Why replace a guy who is getting it ?  He's taking it to the hoop more and is still getting better.  Keep Green in Green.  No sense in building without him.  Keep him and surround him with better players.

Green is a nice player, but he is not a building block.  With his contract coming up at the end of the season, he is looking for a raise.


He is the type of player the Celtics could move and get back a nice return.  Unlike Rondo, he does not draw FA to the roster.  Unlike Rondo, he does not play a loaded position.
