I completely understand the sentiment. ...that said - this team was DOOMED to fail. Olynyk is not a good defender, and everyone else is a point guard (I'm exaggerating).

It is a testament to Stevens how hard he has them trying. But I agree. They're fun to watch - and then suddenly lose: every. single. game. It hurts so much worse because I am so with them.

I watched Brad Stevens walk off the court after the loss to Atlanta.  He did not speak a word to anyone and the expression on his face looked like someone had ripped his heart out with their bare hands. this guy doesn't have much more left in the tank.

yesterday's loss may have been the one most disheartening losses I have ever seen and if Ainge doesn't step up now and upgrade this team he is just liable to lose everything.
how do you explain complete domination in the first two quarters and utter failure for the rest of the game.  how do you explain Rondo making just enough turnovers and missed layups to give Atlanta this game!!!

stevens needs to calm down. this isn't college, the talent level in the NBA is enormous, it's hard to climb up the mountain. and the difference in age and maturity between different teams is also huge.
the celtics will be fine, they're just stuck in that spot where they cant close out. the KG-era c's used to feast on "bad" teams like that, but eventually those teams got better and are now the best in the league. washington is a perfect example.
stevens IMO has been radiating negativity, he needs to follow his own advice and keep his cool, this is going to be a long process.

This was THE WORST for me, especially 'cause I was there in the balcony overhang in the corner to the right of the Cs bench. Row 77, Row D, seat#1, so it happened right in my face:

Game 7 2010 is the worst loss I've suffered as a sports fan cheering for a team, I think.

I have to agree.  The loss to the Lakers after we had the lead in the 4th was crushing.
I was a fan in '87 for the loss to the lakers that year, but the 2010 version was worse to me.
It felt like the last final big run for the 2008 big 3, so it seemed worse.

The WORST part was that Bird got a wide open look after this and missed it long by about an inch.

Still gives me nightmares. Can't remember how long I was depressed after that but I know it was a long time when my wife threatened to not allow me to watch sports anymore.

It gets a LOT worse than this! Thank heavens we aren't 1) capped out long term with aging / useless players, 2) don't have any draft picks or 3) can't compete at all on the court game to game.

This transitional team is competing and flat outplaying most other teams during the majority of games. They've been collapsing in the 4th quarters for a variety of reasons. It's not fun to watch but they're VERY close to winning a bunch of these games.

It could be so much worse, actually.

It can...

It's obvious that we have an offense that on any given night, can score in bunches, and that's an offense without an All Star caliber scorer. Imagine if everyone just gets a cold shooting night?

I understand the frustration on blowing up leads, but at least we are getting ahead in games. I don't know how long and how will they ever learn to close out games, but that's pretty much the only thing that's separating us from being a bad team to a decent team. If they figure out how to close 4th quarters, will be alright.

Now imagine if they don't figure out how to finish, and they cant score? Well, that's worse.

WORST LOSSES (for me)
1.  Bruins - Too many men on the ice game vs the hated Montreal Canadians
2.  Patriots - Perfect Season Super Bowl vs Giants
3.  Red Sox - World Series Buckner game vs the Mets
Before a game on Christmas against the Pacers, Bird told Chuck Person that he had a present for him. During the game, Bird shot a 3-pointer in front of Person. Immediately after releasing the ball, Bird said to Person, "Merry F!#*ing Christmas!" and then the shot went in.

Worst loss ever?  Wow.  Not even close.  I slept like a baby last night (after taking my Ambien).

Really, this is nothing.  Absolutely nothing.  Sorry for the caps here, but: THE CELTICS ARE A BAD TEAM.  Is that news?  Was there a single person watching last night that didn't expect Atlanta to make a game of it?   If so, you haven't been watching your Celtics very closely.

Bad teams lose games.  I am thrilled just to be able to say that these C's give us moments of fun along the way.   The journey to basketball decency doesn't happen simply because we want it to, or simply beacause there are the Boston Celtics.  We are a terrible team that has some promising players.  That's all we are going to be for the near future.

I am actually still enjoying watching them play.  But thread like this are a little like being frustrated that the weather gets colder in December.  It's OK to pine for springtime, but to expect it to come before April is a little unreasonable.

You're right that there's stuff to be encouraged about but it's not just 4th quarter chokes.  Underneath that is Boston having one worst defenses in the league.  If that's because the coach sucks at defense, it won't fix things just to get a defensive center or better talent.

You just described generations of teams for the Kings, Clippers, Nets, Timberwolves and all those other franchises who go from being outright terrible to "make the playoffs but have no shot at ever winning a title" and back again over the course of the decades.

The Timberwolves, for example, are coming off 9 straight seasons of losing records and in 8 of those 9 seasons, they won fewer than 34 games.

That near future you're talking about can remain the near future for a long, long, long time.

Not disagreeing, but the Kings definitely had a shot at winning a title.
