Celtics Telling Teams Rajon Rondo Won't Be Traded

Rival executives have told Bleacher Report that Danny Ainge has been firm that the Boston Celtics will not trade Rajon Rondo ahead of the trade deadline.

"They're definitely bravely saying they won't trade him at this point," said one general manager, who nevertheless added, "I definitely think it's the right thing to trade him. I think Danny knows it."

Rondo's representatives are said to be pursuing a max contract, which would be for five years and an estimated $106 million if he stays with Boston, while his deal elsewhere would be four years and about $79 million.

"My body feels a lot better, my legs are a lot stronger," Rondo said, comparing his play now to last season, when he was just making his way back. "I can get into the paint a lot easier now, this year. Last year, I was pretty slow. So this year I'm a step faster."

"This is going to be his best year of his career, I think," Ainge said, though not because Rondo is on any sort of salary drive. "Knowing Rondo, he just wants to show that he's one of the elite point guards in the NBA again. But yeah, he is a foundational piece that we already have that's right there. But there is uncertainty for this upcoming offseason."

Obviously things could change in Rondo asks out, but I don't think he would turn down the extra year the c's could give him (27 mil extra) . Teams should know that if they trade for him this year it gives them bird rights and would make it easier to resign him, so they better be coming with real offers and no low ball crap .

I still say our best chance of being a contender soon is by resigning Rondo , and another max player next off-season. Plus we might get another solid lottery pick this year to add to it .

agree on the approach.  resign Rondo and get another top player to go with him next year.  having seen the Love fiasco this past offseason, I would not be surprised if whichever team approaches about getting their star player requires our top pick this year as the starting point of negotiations.

Kyrie Irving should be on that list, and he probably is. But if Cleveland truly needs to win now, might they be willing to part with its All-Star point guard in exchange for another who’s better at setting up teammates, and wouldn’t require nearly as many shots?

That’s why Courtney Lee‘s name has come up in trade rumors, but any deal for him (or anyone else) that may materialize won’t include discussions of certain Cleveland players — despite the general manager’s latest assertion.

Oddly this makes me feel like a trade is more likely.  Danny playing his cards close to the chest and all that.

Knowing everything that we do, pretty clear that the ideal world of the Celtics brass involves keeping Rondo. It's obvious now that there's no intense desire to be rid of him, as some have suggested.

Just to play devil's advocate though, would they be aggressively and publicly shopping Rondo while his trade value continues to climb? I have to think the best course of action would be make Rondo as comfortable as possible as he re-asserts himself as a league-wide must-have. Start listening to offers around December and if nothing particularly overwhelming comes in by the deadline, take your chances re-signing him in the summer.

All indications from Rondo is that he loves Boston, and wants to stay.  Why would he say that about a team that has no hope of going anywhere in the playoffs this year?  I think he is sincere, I think the front office also is confident they could re-sign him, and he will only be traded if Ainge and Stevens feel the team would be better off long term without him.  Games like the one in Chicago (when he was out) has to at least make you consider that possibility.

Yes, I don't think DA thinks the same way 75% of the other GM's do.  DA seems to have a really good relationship with ownership, and still has a small stockpile of good will from the last championship.  He is difficult to read, and has shown he will trade anyone at anytime if it is in the best interest of the C's.

That said, while a lot of people here are unlikely to believe Danny when he says Rondo isn't on the block, why are the same people so quick to believe what other GM's leak to the press?  They are all playing games to try to improve their position, all of them.
