Klay Thompson has been killing so far this seasion and it got me thinking about having a 2 guard like him on the Celtics. What are the chances of James Young becoming a Klay Thompson caliber player?  Is he comparison farfetched or unreasonable?  I think the 2 players have similar bodies and athleticism. Klay Thompson is a great shooter, James Young is a good shooter at this point but more than good shooting in transition where Thompson gets a lot of his shots. Jimmy also has potential as an in between game and a defensive player.

I would agree that his ceiling is probably Klay Thompson, which means that I don't think it's likely Young winds up any better than Klay Thompson is right now, as far as a best case scenario is concerned.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

Good but not great SG/SG sounds about right for our hopes.

I would say we have a better chance with Sully becoming the next Kevin Love then assigning Young to another all-star. But then again who really knows. He's only 19. Young would have to work on his handle and quickness if you want to start comparisons. I think its these reasons the Celtics see him more of a small forward right now.

I love the optimism, but he has played a grand total of six minutes so far.  We have not had a chance to get a glimpse of what he is and isn't capable of becoming.

Well no one has suggested that yet so no worries.

How can anybody see Young's ceiling already?  He hasn't even done anything in Summer League or preseason yet.  Usually our guys have dominated in those venues before we started screaming about their potential.

Young could easily still be another Fab Melo.  I bet you could find threads saying stuff like Jujuan Johnson's ceiling = Kevin Garnett?
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

There was a whole "Sully>Love" thread a week or two back.  Most people strongly disagreed, though.

More on topic, I don't know if Young is the same kind of player as Klay Thompson, but perhaps as an absolute ceiling he could have a comparable impact.  Thompson's not an All-Star though, at least not yet.

That's the part I was refering to, Klay isn't an all-star. Though I wouldn't put it past the hype train to latch onto a hot start to get him there.

I wondered what's up with all the James Young threads, and it turns out there was a meaningless Young sighting in the blowout I didn't watch. I guess it makes sense now.

Way too early to tell from six minutes of garbage time, but if he can take some of Kobe Bradley's playing time I'll be very happy.

Yeah, it's fun to fantasize about it I guess, but right now I don't see a basis for comparing him to anyone besides his predecessors as volume-scoring wings at Kentucky- Archie Goodwyn, Doron Lamb, Jodie Meeks...

That would be a solid outcome if he blossomed into someone on the spectrum of Jodie Meeks to Aaron Afflalo - a player who gives you good outside shooting, solid d, and maybe some extra creative juice.

All of these comparisons, though, are anticipating that Young is going to turn into a sharpshooter because he has such nice balance and form. It's quite a thing to project a guy as an elite 3-point shooter just because he looks nice putting it up.

This.

Also, if my wife gets pregnant again, our baby's ceiling is Michael Jordan, but white.

Actually, theoretically, it could even be Michael Jordan period...

actually, based upon the existence of this very thread along with comments in other threads, that tiny sighting of Young was quite meaningful for the herds and masses of CB who long and lust after the next celtic star.

he is 18 years old and has a total nba experience of about 5-6 minutes. who the hell knows what this guy will be in the future? in any event, i wish him luck and i hope he becomes better than larry bird.

one addition...young does seem to be talented as a basketball player. with CBS as his coach he probably has as good a chance to reach his potential as anywhere.

I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.
