powell looks like he will fit in the type of game brad wants to play high IQ moves good can play multiple positions-what good is a big, strong athletic center that has a cranky knee and can't play or practice, too bad what promise he showed early last year--we have a lot of draft picks coming that might make powell more expendable-if we play tough defense and run i think we should expect quite a few injuries this season-most of these guys have to play at 100% to survive in this league-

Was gonna ask "where the heck is Colton Iverson?".

Europe.

But, wow. We really have 15 (mostly, including the usual suspects like Phil P.) guaranteed.

----

I actually agree with Chris22. But I'm not as strong with my convictions as I am merely presenting my opinion based on what I've read of Powell and what I've seen and read of Fav.

Make no mistake. It's not that I'm saying Fav is garbage. He plays big. He can shoot. Surprising athleticism. Defensive potential. You can see why there's intrigue.

But when talking about role players, I'd say the ability to even stay on the floor and have a role is quite vital.

Powell seems to have been able to do that today (so I've heard).

Whereas it seems Fav still has yet to understand our defensive rotations (and perhaps offensive sets). It seems crippling how unaware he is on defense as he's been relegated to the pine as last season progressed.

It seems there's a significant language barrier and/or an issue with his BBIQ and/or effort. In fact, I believe Fav's BBIQ/effort has been called into question and it's a part of why he's been available for so long.

If you want centers with a bit of upside (enough to become a role player center), we have Zeller (who seems to understand the game a little better, despite the bad games, and is younger too).

----

Powell seems to be able to be the 3 and D (not to mention hustle) guy and that will always let you stay on the floor.

He's only 23.

A guy who's 6'11 (more like 6'9-6'10) with the agility to play the 3 or 4, willingness to play defense, smarts and hustle is interesting.

The ability to defend the wings is crucial.

----

I'd personally take the "wing who looks like he can be a plus defender and be a solid garbage guy on offense" over the "big who can shoot, play big and show some skill offensively and be somewhat of an offensive force but cannot cover pick and rolls or play organized defense".

But, hey, Powell's apparent inability to play offense could hurt him. As could, perhaps, his agility (while quick for a 6'11 guy, scouting reports say he's a PF. My impression is he played against backup SFs of the KNICKS, not a very good barometer).

Powell gives me more hope though.

----

But with the (relatively) large amount of noise made about the Faverani signing, I'm thinking Ainge might not be too willing to shed Faverani so soon (say, by trading him along with a 2nd rounder - though it sounds like it'll be a difficult task now that teams seem to be stockpiling players left and right).

Still, Faverani seems to have fallen out of faver-ani with the alleged drunk driving and non-performance.

The next targets?

Naturally Bass but Ainge has a binkie for Bass (contrary to most posters, I'd say it's justifiable).

Not Gerald Wallace. For reasons I've explored in depth, I really don't think we're gonna trade Wallace until he becomes an expiring.

Thornton? Zeller maybe?

Or Joel Anthony.

I'd say Joel Anthony, Thornton, Zeller and Faverani in no particular order could be cut. On the very off chance maybe Bass or even Green could be moved. I just really hope Powell is kept.

He is the first young athletic big I can remember us having in a long time.

I would like to keep him, but unless the Celtics somehow trade Bass away, there just isn't any space on the roster to justify keeping him.

Waive Faverani.
That'd be eating not a small amount of salary. It'd also leave us even more under manned at C. If his injury is season ending or close to it it could happen I guess.

Faverani got busted for drunk driving

This might not exactly have been true.

There was Chris Johnson and Ryan Hollins.

Note: Johnson the big man, not the wing player lefty of last year.

Can't cut Pressey.

That kid is a ball of fire that fuel s the late runs and carry a the team to keep the energy going.

Need to keep Thornton .  He his worth a few buckets when the rest of the team is cold as ice.

Best just trade Rondo for a nice center  :D

But seriously ......ElHombre seems to have the Bynum knee thing going on ......he may have to go.

Cut Pressey or Fav

is preparing to come back with the 'a guy with V.Fav.'s skills is indispensable' argument...

With 16 guaranteed contracts, the C's have to cut someone (if no trades) with a guaranteed deal, and unless they cut someone another team would claim off waivers, they're going to have to eat the cost of that player's salary.  Accordingly, I think it likely Powell can earn a spot on the roster if he continues to play well.

Pressey's played too well to be cut, even if Turner at the point is eating into his minutes.  Fav, on the other hand, has been hurt, wasn't all that good last year, and may or may not have some pending discipline due to his alleged drunk driving issue.  His final year is non-guaranteed, and he seems like the easy player to get rid of.  If the C's are lucky, some team interested in his $2.18 million non-guaranteed final year will claim him for the purpose of trading down the road.  Unlikely, but not inconceivable.

Joel Anthony is the other obvious candidate, but he seems more useful than Fav.

Joel Anthony

Wow, I somehow forgot about this 32 yo powerhouse from Canada with a 2.3 PPG career average. Another indispensable addition to the roster of the C's.

The term 3 and D is thrown around way too often. I want to keep Powell -- and would be willing to eat Joel Anthony's salary -- but in what way is he a 3 and D player? I haven't seen him take an NBA 3 and he was 10-for-39 from college range last year.

Quick comment about Favorani-

It's too far along to talk about potential. He's 26 now. He was a solid player for stretch early last season; he was definitely not garbage. I wouldn't expect him to play better than that, though.

Quick comment about Powell-

He wasn't just guarding nobodies. He also wasn't playing power forward for most of his turn last night. He was marking Hardaway for the first 5 minutes or so, playing the 3 with Sullinger at the 4 and Zeller at the 5. THAT is super interesting because with that length he was doing an amazing job cutting off passes and contesting shots on the perimeter.

I hope we keep Powell around on the 15 man roster. He can be a servicable big man in 15 to 20 spot minutes a night here and there. He is never going to be a superstar but he can step in an make positive contributions right from the start. I like his size and his game and he seem like a good fit for our system. I'd keep him over Fav at this point. Fav hasn't shown me anything except injuries.

I won't totally jump on Powell yet, but from what I see, he at least deserves to be in our 3rd string lineup, a body to practice with . He has quick hands, very athletic, 6'11 @ 240 so he has ok size.

he's looked intriguing so far but it's only 2 preseason games.  Unless Danny makes a trade to free up a roster space or Fav looks to be out for extended time, Powell will probably be the one that's let go.
