From rotations to now hearing this:

http://www.celticsblog.com/2014/10/3/6900235/brandon-bass-has-extended-his-range-to-include-the-corner-3-pointer

the 3 point shot is the least efficient shot in basketball and now we're encouraging a guy that has recently "found this range"? I thought Stevens was a "numbers guy". shouldn't he know this?

I could barely tolerate Sullinger being encouraged to take 3's, but now Bass too?

I think Stevens is good at what he does(using rotations the way he does) even though I ultimately think it's losing basketball.  i'm hoping all of this is just not having the players to go to war with. but I'm more than concerned.

Bass taking threes is good for the Overall Tank job .

To be honest I'm suprised that nobody had thought to coax Bass, a forward who's that efficient in the mid  range, to extend his range out a little more to the 3 point line till now.

except sully shoots 3's more than he takes 2's.

A.  No he doesn't - he took 208 3s and 691 2s last year.  He even took more shots at the rim (279) and from 3-10 ft (220) than from 3.  How many wrong statements are you gonna make before you start looking things up?

B.  I and a lot of other fans would prefer he work more in the post and less from 3 than he did last year, because his percentage on those 208 was terrible.
Of Sully's 691 2s last year, 499 were inside 10 feet, and that's an efficient shot that most would say should be his "bread and butter." He also took 192 shots from 10 feet out to the 3 point line, and those sort of shots aren't really efficient unless he is making a very high percentage of them (say 55 to 60%).

The prevailing wisdom is that, for most players, it is better to take 3 point shots rather than long twos based on average points per shot. The theory being that if you can make 50% of your long 2's (1 pps) you should be able to hit 40% of your 3's, especially corner 3's, (1.2 pps), so you should always choose a 3 over a 2. In reality, YMMV.

Ideally, for a big (PF/C), what you want is a player that hits +40% of his 3's and +60% of his shots inside 10 feet and doesn't take any other shots.

Pretty soon we're going to hear the Celts have signed Stevie Wonder to a 10 day contract to be a 3-point specialist.

Well, Bass has a career fg% of 49.1% and ft% of 83%. That says good shooting. Unless, their's some inflation of that figure by at basket 2s.

I think Bass shooting 3's is great. Since 3's are worth more than two's it is in fact one of the most efficient shots in the NBA, especially from the corner where it is closer.

Having Bass in the corner spreads the floor more than him getting the ball at the elbow. Teams love 3 point shooting bigs, if he's able to shoot 35%+ then his value skyrockets.

I think opening the paint up for the other bigs - Sully/Zeller in the post and KO's drives - would be a huge asset to the offense too.  It'd give Rondo more room to operate as well.

calm down, I was being sarcastic by exaggerating the truth.

and I am one of those that wish sully was a low post player instead of a "stretch 4". or encouraged to be a "stretch 4"....like the way Bass is now.

He definitely has a nice shot.  Good form, consistent as heck.  Not a quick release, but nice on the pick/pop when he's open.

Unfortunately, no pass Bass has to either shoot or simply not get the ball in that situation.

If Sully or KO is the pick man and Bass is in the corner (instead of the other way around), the extra pass can be made if necessary, like when the entire defense shifts over  to help on expected Rondo penetration, and Bass' man in the corner rotates to the pick man.

When Bass is traded and it's both Sully and KO, then we can hopefully see some nice ball movement on offense again, and the ball can whip around both of them and then back to Rondo, Green, or Bradley on a cut from a weakside screen or something.

As good as Brandon is, there's a reason he's a journeyman.

But Bass' release is too slow for him to be shooting them off picks or anything; he's going to be a spot up guy there in the corner.

true. but I don't think Ainge, the players or Stevens are trying to tank. they're striving to be an 8 seed.

it's nice that we have all these stretch 4's but is anyone going to play down low? one of our 18 SG's?

If you're looking for Brandon Bass to play down low, that ship sailed long ago.

I think you see Smart posting up when they put 1's on him, Green posting up when there are smaller 3's on him. I think Sullinger will post up a lot as well
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Plus while I do think a post option is important for a NBA team to have, it should no longer be a focal point of the team's offense.
