good question
i doubt many normal fans could say they've seen much to justifty saying young couldnt be better than exum. young played at a high level on a near championship team last year NCAA. exum a lot of us have never seen play at all. seems odd to me if hes so good he cant even get in the game at the world cup.
so yeah, based on casual observations it seems young possibly could turn out better than exum - why not?

have you tried looking into a new fad called punctuation? if not, you may consider doing so.  :)
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

kentucky coach called him fastest in draft, athletic with that legitimate 7ft wingspan and sweet shot also look what marcus did at select camp-i think ainge scored with sullinger and kelly  in his draft slots and now to grab marcus and young while adding tyler, thornton and turner for very little in return-i also think green did fine last year considering all the shuffling and team around him and still coming back mentally from heart surgery--is james young as good as aaron gordon another maybe

Drafting is a crapshoot at best, especially with how young the NBA rookies are.  No one even knows if Wiggins will be good much less James Young.  The thing with the Celtics for the next few years is that they have so many picks, they can take chances and hope to get lucky along the way.  I suspect they will make one "safe" pick and one "upside" pick each year that they have 2 or more picks.

Most of these upside picks will "probably" end up being no better than Gerald Green but if they do get lucky even once, that may be all they need.  The "safe" picks are not sure things either of course so please don't over analyze my theory.

In terms of Young, I think he is a great upside pick to take a chance on.  Better than Exum?; probably not but Exum could be the next Rubio or the next Tony Parker, who knows.  My point is this comparison may be more about how bad Exum ends up vs. how good Young ends up.  If both are bad and Young is a little less bad, it doesn't help the Celtics.

Man it's hard to read what you wrote. You don't have to pay for characters  ;) I can just guess the point of your post.  :-\

Jamrs Young to me is a great, very low risk - high reward pick.

I think at worst he can come in off the bench and score 10 or so points or be a shooter. At best, we could be looking at a SG/SF who can score in a variety of ways.

And with how he played in the NCAA Tournament, i think we picked a kid whos not afraid of the big stage, and thats good moving forward.

This. Watching him in the tourney and thinking he was probably one of the best players on the floor in every game. Not because he stood out like some other players, but he was the guy that would take the big shot and want to take the big shot and make it.

Listening to him in interviews you get mixed signals, he doesn't come off very well some times, but that could be more age than anything. But what I do like is when he talks about being in the spot light and he wants it. He wants the big shot. That's what a guy like Green lacks and hurts his game a bit, and what PP who wasn't a super athlete kinda like Young made him so good.

So he has the attitude, but know we just have to see if what they were saying about the work outs along with the attitude, will translate to the actual game.

Says the guy who put apostrophes at the end of "says" and "sentences".  :P
edit: and who improperly pluralized the word "sentences". (It was either that or you said "didn't" instead of "doesn't".)

In a word, yes.  Given where he was picked, I'm hoping he has some type of Bradley-like impact.  For comparison in the same draft, Exum could be a Ekpe Udoh type lottery pick.  We won't really have any clue until both log several NBA seasons.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Felt Young was going top ten. Glad we have him and he has all the upside Exum has. Young needs to work extra hard because he is currently stuck at the end of the depth chart. He needs to go hard every practice and get in a lot of work.

Well, he's clearly a far worse prospect than Exum. Exum has shown some pretty sweet offensive skills, whereas Young has shown pretty much shooting. I like prospects with length + shooting, but Young will need to show big time improvement on D to win me over. If he ends up better than Exum, it will be due to a combination of better-than-expected development from him and far-worse-than-expected development from Exum.

Not a bad idea to go with a young tools-y prospect at #17, but I don't see why that couldn't have been Capela.

With the current log jam of guards, i hope he gets sent to Maine and get some heavy minutes of playtime there. The last thing we need is to keep benching this kid.

The so called "demotion" to the D League is much better IMO that riding the bench for the regular roster. This kid has no spot right now but needs to play. Let him play and learn the NBA style of speed and physicality there.

All that matters is he's playing competitively. Then bring him up once we traded the rest of the guards. Assuming his assignment goes well, he'll be confident in the main roster.

But given how little we've seen of Exum, Young has far less chance of being a bust.
