NH is much nicer than Maine. Maine is one of the worst welfare states in the US and has an absurdly high unemployment rate. It's better than Mass, but it's still a stink hole. Great place to visit, horrible place to live.

And for the record, Lake Winnipesaukee is a bit nicer than Lake Sebago. But, the White Mountains top either.

I wouldn't say NH is Much nicer than Maine. I think they are on par with each other from what my friends say about NH. Each one has it's pocket good and bad towns.

Maine's biggest issue is some of the old locals that don't want to let resorts into Northern Maine were there are a TON of lakes that could support reports that could run summer, fall, and winter. But if done right it could still keep and old town feeling while bringing in a ton of jobs.

Now unless you like out door things there isn't much to do. It's getting better in Bangor, were we have a new auditorium, and a counsel member that really has been pushing to have some thing going on just about very night in the city. It is a really good state to raise a family because the people on the most part are really nice and it's not crazy busy. The crime rate is low, we do have a drug problem, and the homless is increasing, but thats because Mass has been sending them to Portland and Portland has been sending them up to Bangor. And at some point Bangor will send them up to Canada! :D

KGs Knee is not that well informed....Maine's unemployment rate is 5.5 percent which places it 19th in the nation.  For perspective Mass has the same 5.5%, while NH has a 4.5%, Vermont has 3.5%, Rhode Island has a 7.9%.

Maine is a great place to live especially if you have a young family.  I grew up here, left for college, and stayed in south Florida for 15 years.  I have recently moved back and my entire family couldn't be happier (including my Floridian wife).  People are incredibly nice, small cities and towns are still very community oriented, Portland is a fun small city with good food, arts, and sports. It's also the safest state in the nation.

I'm a big fan of NH as well and enjoy the N.Conway and the White Mountains, but I'll take Maine's diverse and beautiful beaches over the Mountains any day of the week. (heres a link..http://www.theguardian.com/travel/2013/sep/21/top-10-maine-beaches-new-england-usa)

As far as problems Maine has a few...its quickly aging state (the oldest state in the nation), politics has become incredibly partisan over the past several governors (do nothing legislature), and we don't do a good job of keeping college students in the state (it's cheaper to go to UFlorida than UMaine).  Also like NH and Vermont, rural Maine is battling substance abuse...thanks to the pain pill culture our poor residents in the country can't afford the pharma they got hooked on and moved to illegal substitutes.

Second this.
As a mainer born and bread I take serious exception to the "stink hole" comment.
I live in Portland, just got back from a weeks vacation in Hancock county and choose to stay on this side of the kittery bridge as much as possible. Leaving Maine feels like I need a passport. We got it good here.

Third this. I'm also a native Mainuh  ;D , and I take exception to the "stink hole" comment. Maine can be a tough place economically, but it's also beautiful, and a great place to raise a family. I'm glad I spent my formative years there, and would love to go back. I'm now in SoCal, in Los Angeles County, and it's way less aesthetically appealing than Maine, and no better economically. Plus there's tons of Lakers fans polluting the air here.

By what measures are Maine and New Hampshire better than Massachusetts?

More natural beauty, for one. Western Mass. is pretty nice, but nothing like Maine.

Fewer people from Massachusetts, too.
