This is the same fan base that shredded DA for getting rid of Antoine Walker, don't forget.
I don't mean to be the one to stand up for Antoine, but Raef was on a five year deal on what was essentially a max contract back then coming off major knee surgery. It was a huge mid-step by Ainge would could have just dumped Antoine for an expiring if that was his intention.
Also, Antoine was the leader during the only exciting time in a 15-17 year period. You may not have liked his game, but he did good things for the Cs during an otherwise underwhelming time.
Antoine was the leader during this only exciting time, but he was a majorly flawed player, and like Danny said when he first became the GM here, this Celtics team had reached their ceiling and were not going to win a title. Yeah we can enjoy the playoff berths and some excitement, but at the end of the day this is the Boston Celtics, we're here to win NBA championships. Antoine had to go, itd be impossible to get to the next level with his style of play at the salary he was making.
So getting back to your point. Yes, the trade wasnt the greatest in the world and you can find plenty of negatives about it, but I LOVE the idea of the trade, and its what makes Danny a championship GM. SO many GMs in the league would have rode that Antoine and Paul team right into the ground until it was time to rebuild again....and keep in mind contracts and players acquired in the Antoine trade were used to acquire KG and Ray Allen.
I'm an Antoine apologist, just to be upfront about it.
Danny traded Antoine away because of Danny's own personal opinions about Antoine's "[negative] grasp on the Celtic franchise". (Danny's words, not mine).
Danny went on to run his mouth, saying that if Antoine was Michael Jordon or Larry Bird or Bill Russell, it would be "okay" to have a grasp on the franchise.
So basically, Danny traded Antoine away because Antoine wasn't Michael Jordon or Larry Bird or Bill Russell.
Enough of Antoine.....except Danny wasn't done with him, cause he traded for him back. Weird. I know.
Except it wasn't really that weird. Re-trading for Antoine re-paired the Pierce/Walker duo (PLUS we still had WALTAH!)
But now you have much better talent surrounding them. Now you have a Raef Lafrentz versus Vitaly/Battie.
Now you have Ricky Davis versus Eric Willams.
Gary Payton versus Kenny Anderson? I say a wash, but I lean to Gary over Kenny since Gary's body of work was far talented and more spectacular than Kenny Anderson's body of work.
And let's not forget the youngsters: Big Al Jefferson, Jiri Welsch, Tony Allen, Delonte West, Marcus Banks.
What youngsters did Jim O'Brien have to work with? Ohhh right, Antoine and Paul Pierce.
The biggest important key trade in Danny Ainge's tenure was the trade he DID NOT make.
After an injury riddled 24 win season, Paul Pierce requested for a trade. If I recall correctly: that talks involving Portland and LA Clippers were involved.
If Ainge does trade Pierce away, there would be no trade for Ray Allen, no trade for KG.
Another key component to the champion B.OP Danny Ainge was.......Kevin McHale. If it were anyone else besides McHale, there is virtually no chance another GM would have KG traded to us for that package.
Back to 2014-2015. Do we have any youngsters on their way to be a Paul Pierce, what about just an Antoine Walker? Do any of our youngsters have the potential to turn out to be All-Stars? Do any of our youngsters have a chance to be a Tim Duncan? A David Robinson? A Dirk Nowitzki? Or "just" a Tony Parker? Just a Manu Ginoboli? These are the drafted players that won 'chips with their drafted team. Even the Pistons didn't draft Chauncy or Rip or Sheed.
You don't win 'chips very much with the draft. You win 'chips with acquiring talent through FA or trade.
