The Max isn't going to happen no matter what he accomplishes next year.  He can't get the same number of assists he has had in the past because we don't have the same quality shooters.

You saw plenty of posts like this before last year, when he led the league in assists from February on. Now you see a lot of "everyone knew Rondo would still get his assists but..." posts.  Keep up.

Just an idea.... maybe the assist number is not a great indicator of a player's value?  For example;
1.  If a player averages 10 assists a game or more, chances are he has the ball in his hand quite a bit.  Thus, limiting input from other players.  Look at the assists stats for the Spurs in the NBA Finals this year.

I listed the total assists for the leading players for each series.  (Note that none of these players has Rondo type assist numbers for any of the series. )
Series           Mavs  7games       Trail Blazers  5 games  Thunder 6 games         Heat 5 games

Berenelli               2                                    7                                 7                             3
Diaw                   20                                  15                               18                           29
Duncan                 9                                  13                               12                           10
Gianobili              22                                  19                               22                           22
Green                    5                                    4                                 6                             6
Leonard                 7                                    6                               15                           10
Mills                      10                                    6                                 9                            8
Parker                  33                                  26                               29                          23
Splitter                  16                                  13                                  7                        10

Maybe assist numbers isn't a great indicator of a player's value, that's for you to decide. But your example isn't really a great one because the Spurs have better passers than the Celts at pretty much every position but point guard. Before Rondo came back we were near the bottom of the league in percentage of assisted baskets. With Rondo we were above average in that category. Things might be different if you replaced Humphries and Bradley with Diaw and Manu, or even KG and PP, but expecting anything like that kind of assist distribution from last year's Celts team isn't overly realistic.

This is exactly what we should be looking for. It was pretty obvious that Rondo was not himself yet. What I fear the most is that he may never be the same. We should know more early in this upcoming season.

That Spurs team is very hard to compare to us, or really any other team in the league. Every position has an elite passer working under Pop's system. I think a better example of where our team could be compared to is last year's Wizards, where Wall was able to distribute to all his players (none of which were elite) while also holding the ball most of the time.

rondo is not a max guy. trade him to get something in return so we don't get nothing if he walks.  rondo isn't a max player bc he will never be a #1 or #2 guy.  he will always be the third guy on a contender.

most important stat: games played. He absolutely needs to stay healthy.

Next most important thing is not a stat. I want to see him show defensive discipline. I think he developed some bad habits playing with KG behind him, and he now loves gambling for steals. That's fine when you have arguably the GOAT help defender backing you up, but when your 2nd line is KO and Sully, or Bass or Faverani or Zeller, those gambles are giving away too many easy layups.

Offensively I expect Rondo to struggle a bit. He isn't the type of guy who can put a team on his back. He needs to have stars around him to thrive individually. I won't be too worried if he posts a line like 13pts/8ast/6reb in 35min/game.

And a star player. The only star you'll probably have in a while, better keep him while you can.

I like this thread because it kinda shows those who don't want to pay Rondo the max because he can't reasonably play at a level deserving and those who don't want to pay Rondo the max because he's Rondo.

17ppg, 10apg, 4.5rbg, 1.9spg, 46 fg%, 31-36 3p%, 70 ft% and play 75 + games.
