Rondo can't shoot or defend.
Let someone else overpay him.

The Max isn't going to happen no matter what he accomplishes next year.  He can't get the same number of assists he has had in the past because we don't have the same quality shooters.

Danny is stocking up on draft picks.  Thus, he is looking for a youth movement.  Rajon will be 29 years old at the end of the season.  Plus, the ACL injury would make any GM leery of offering that sort of deal.

I think the most he'll be offered is $10 million/year for 3 years.  There may be teams willing to offer more, but not for 4 years.

I don't get that mentality. If Rondo plays All-Star caliber all NBA 2nd team type basketball, why would you not max him out? At some point you have to start the foundation of your team, or else you just end up like the Sixers, constantly trading to get younger, but not getting any better.

I wonder how can he be an All-Star caliber player if he doesn't have the players around him to pass it to.  Plus, he is going to have competition at his position with the arrival of Smart.  Smart can pass the ball and play defense too.

You might be right about the 76's, but the jury is still out.  If Noel and Embiid get healthy and stay healthy no one will come close to attacking the rim (with any meaningful success) on them. They could end up being a team to reckon within the next year or two.  In a similar vein, there were a number of posters who discounted the Raptors last year... and they ended up having a much better season than the Celtics.

His assists per 36 in 13/14 were identical to his 12/13 numbers according to basketball reference.

You got me there.  Maybe it was the injury thing...he didn't look like All-star material last year to me.

No he can't.

He shot 40% from the field last year, and he isn't as quick since he hurt his knee.

And in 12/13 we lost the last 6 games Rondo played in before he got injured.

Small sample size, but also a largely irrelevant dataset.

Honestly, here is where teams get in trouble.  There are maybe 10 max guys in the league (guesstimating here).  Rondo is not one of them.  So when a team pays a non-max guy max money, they hamstrung their roster.

I realize it is a catch 22 so I am not suggesting there is an easy solution.  Just that the team needs to think long and hard about rondo.

It's a puzzling topic, first of all, stats doesn't matter all that much, second, like many of you said, he is not a max type of a guy.
The only way that he gets max is if he leads THIS team deep into the playoffs, showing leadership, and putting down triple-doubles, like its 2010-2011 all over again, and on top of all that, he needs to start playing some defense.
But, to play along, this would be the numbers:
20 PPG, 12 AS, 6 REB, 2 STL, 50,35,80 %  :)
