Until we see them play in the NBA it is silly.

I think Marcus Smart plays like Smart and James Young like Young.

This, one million times.

It's always fun to go to old drafts and look at the comparisons, they're usually hilariously off base

I prefer it when they give a both a best-care and a worst-case scenario, preferably with a likely scenario also.

I could give best and Worst case scenarios but worst case scenarios depress me so I'll just go with the best case - stay in denial of anything other than that outcome, even if it happens...  :)

So -

Marcus Smart - Bigger, stronger Joe Dumars with a KG mentality. At 6'3" or whatever he is he could possibly be the toughest guy we put on the court any given night, mentally and physically.
He's definitely an instigator and I 100% believe his shot will come around. He'll never be a Ray Allen, but I think he can become a good shooter that you have to respect.

James Young - Maybe because he's left handed and kind of "slinky" the way he slashes, he reminds me the most of James Harden. Projecting out 2-3 years, if he combines much improved ball handling and a half decent right hand for shots around the rim with his decent outside stroke, I could see him being a very difficult cover. I assume he will also improve defensively as he gets stronger and quicker with NBA training regimens.

I think both of these guys have "it" to get there. They were both often times called upon to produce when it mattered most for their teams and often times delivered nicely.

Wow. Vinnie had one of the ugliest shots I've ever seen. Yet it went in.

Marcus Smart ~ Chauncey Billups

James Young ~ Reggie Miller

You've got the 6'3" combo guard with the thick build, score first mentality with the ability to lead a team and distribute. Old Big 12 conference roots. Top pick after their sophomore seasons.

Reggie Miller is one of the best shooters of ALL TIME.  I doubt we could have gotten that lucky with Young.  However, he does have a height advantage over Miller.  If he could turn out as the next Arron Afflalo, I'd be pretty satisfied considering he was the 17th pick.

As for Smart, I think his defense will ignite the rest of his game and that's exciting.  He also has excellent strength and size for the position.  If he were to turn into say the next Gary Payton, I think the Celtics struck gold there.

I can see Marcus Smart being a lot like Lance Stephenson, without the jumper (to start, anyway), but he is not Joe Dumars.  Dumars was one of the best shooters of all time, who also entered the league with that skill.  He was such a good ball handler as well.  I'm just saying - don't underestimate or undervalue Joe D.  He was an awesome player.

As for Young, I heard Jalen compare him to Mo Pete on draft night, as undoubtedly many of you have, as well, but Young can already take it to the basket.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember Peterson being exactly adept at getting to the hoop.  Not that he couldn't do it, but he was just more of a shooter.  Man, he used to kill us.  Very clutch, as well.

Anyway, nbadraft.net compared Young to Michael Redd at one point, presumably because they're both left-handed shooting swingmen ::)  I didn't see Redd play in college, but we all know how great and how complete of a scorer he was in the NBA until his knees gave out, inexplicably.  I wish that we would have signed him for 11-12, but I digress.  I really don't see the comparison.  At least, not yet.  Can Young score in the post and come off of pin downs, etc, like Redd could?  I'm just trying to be realistic.

Interesting.  Personally, as much as I loved Peaches, I hope that Young turns out to be much more than him.  Wasn't he (Young), rated the best scorer of his class coming out of high school?

James Young - Alex English

:o  You're comparing him to the guy who scored the most points in the NBA during the 80s?  Wow.  Why?

Beefy combo guard.

Although Smart is beefier.

And Vinnie only averaged 12 points a game.

Alex English was 6'7" 190.  I was commenting on your comparison of James Young to him, not Marcus Smart to the former Nugget.  I apologize if I wasn't clear about that.

Deron Williams can shoot, though, and has been able to since his college days.  I hope that Smart will be tougher, not injury prone, nor a coach killer.  I love how all of those 'analysts' think that D-Will is better than Rondo.  Yeah, okay ::)  Ankle problems or not, the guy's a fraud imo.
