Draft performers so far

Just wanted to put this out there for all the guys who have been so critical of Marcus Smart for his Summer League performance, and also so critical of Danny Ainge for drafting him.

Summer League stats so far sorted by PPG):

1: Doug McDermott (20.5 PTS, 3.0 REB, 2.5 AST, 0 STL, 0.5 BLK, 3.0 TO, 45% FG, 50% 3PT, 94% FT, +17.5 PIE)

So far I think it's safe to say that Smart has more than held his own against the rest of the competition from his draft class (who were expected to go top 8-10).

What about Rodney Hood?  I wanted James Young, but it was tough to choose between those two.  That one could come back to haunt us if Young doesn't develop into the type of player we think, and hope, that he can be.  Didn't Hood have 29 the other day in a matchup with Jabari?  I think we'd all feel better, or perhaps not, as the case may be, about James Young if he had been able to play in the summer league, but you don't take getting into a car accident lightly.  It wasn't a major one, was it?  No one died or was paralyzed, right?  Hopefully he wasn't drinking.  Do you have a link for the summer league stats?  I can never find the right one.

I had a feeling that McDermott would be a better NBA scorer than people predicted.  The type of numbers he put up in college aren't the type of numbers you can put up just by being a pure spot-up shooter and nothing else (e.g. Korver). 

To dominate at the college level the way he did (to the tune of 28 PPG or so) you need to be able to score in multiple ways.  His size at the SF position (6'8" - 6'9") will give him an advantage on many nights, because when he's up against 6'5" and 6'6" SF's he'll be able to shoot right over them, or back them down in the post.  Plus if players run hard at him, he's got the ability to put is on the court and drive to the basket.  He's a pretty complete offensive player.

I don't necessarily expect him to continue to be a 20 PPG scorer in the actual NBA season, but I do think he'll be a very productive scorer much like Mike Miller and Wally Sczerbiak were in their primes.

I agree. But we got a nice backup prize in james young. He could be a really good sf/sg in the nba

I continuously stated the value of Smart's ability to draw contact for FTAs; even when his shot isn't falling, he can still put points on the board in addition to impacting every facet of the game sans rim protection.

P.S. If Sullinger were playing in the Summer League he'd lead the league in PIE and CAKE.

True, but Morrison averaged 30 points per 40 minutes in one college season (his last one).

McDermott averaged those numbers in three of his four college seasons.
