Anyone else really surprised by KG?

I don't know if anyone else thinks like this, but I am actually really surprised that Kevin Garnett seems to be leaning towards coming back to the Nets despite the departure of Pierce. When he was with the Celtics I was legitimately worried he would retire a couple of different times because he really struck me as someone that could walk away while he was still a very formidable player.

He was only able to play 20 minutes a game last year. I guess his defensive statistics were still pretty darn good over all. However, watching him in the actual games there were a painful number of times where wings would just blow by him because his lateral quickness has decreased so dramatically. I don't think his mind has been able adjust to the decline with where he positions himself and how he times his movements. It also appeared that his seemingly always reliable jumpshop had started to betray him. I really like KG and was hoping we wouldn't end up having these kinds of images ingrained too heavily in our brains for next year (and maybe more)

I don't want him to go the ways of Ewing, Hakeem (or Parish, Jordan, etc), but we kind of did it to him. He has every right to play as long as he wants. It's just that it would be a lot more acceptable if it were in Boston or Minny than on an iffy Brooklyn team (without his buddy Pierce).

Jordan didnt make the playoffs but he still went out like a boss IMO!

Came back after another big layoff, put up 20 + ppg over 40 years old!

If I were KG, I would take the Wallace approach. Retire, then come back mid season for a contender.

Unless Garnett negotiates a buy-out, if he filed for retirement, he can't come back for one year without the unanimous approval of every team in the league.

I figured he might retire once he was no longer a high level starter, but I also didn't think he'd be getting 10+ million once he hit that point. Since he's still getting paid very well I understand coming back.

It is not really about what I would do or repercussions from anyone

There are plenty of recent greats like David Robinson, Karl Malone, Stockton and Reggie Miller that retired when they definitely could have cashed in on another year of sizeable pay.

Then there are players like payton, shaq, mitch richmond and obviously ewing who played until they could not get another team to sign them or their bodies could no longer handle an NBA season. KG always struck me as more of a guy that would fit in to the first group, which is why I have been surprised.

I really always hoped and wanted to see KG walk off the floor when he didn't have it.  That would have been last season, at least this season.

I mean he wasn't the same athlete after the injury anyways but he will still very good with us.  Now he just can't bring it for long enough to be KG.

doubt it. I think if they won, they would have gone for one more. You feel confident after you win that it can be done again.

Anyone watch the interview with Steve Nash?  Laker's owe him $11 million, and he is coming  back to collect it. He hopes he plays okay, but..it is all about the money. $12 million is alot of money to walk away from, even though he has made sooooo much in his career. How much is too much?
This is sad, I would like to see him walk away with pride.  Same with Allen, rumors of him following LeBron, what a way to go out.

I always thought KG was so intense that if he couldn't play at HIS level than he would retire.  Anyone remember the shock of Mike Schmidt (baseball) retiring because he wasn't happy with his performance?
Always felt KG would retire after last season which he really looked … retire able 

I guess he deserves to play as long as he wants.  Wouldn't be surprised if he gets an earful from other players outplaying him since he's been so vocal for so long against opposing players.
