The Celtics acquire Tyler Zeller, Marcus Thornton and the Cavaliers' 2016 first round pick. Boston will have $33 million in contracts coming off the books in Thornton, Rajon Rondo, Brandon Bass and Joel Anthony.

33 mil in cap space... to be honest, I don't think Danny is done here...I believe he will continue to shed as much salary as possible. Even if he didn't, he can trade people via Bradley or the Green

33 alone can re-sign Rondo (hopefully for cheap), and another star roughly around the 15 mil range

OR (and though I'd hate to wait this long, it could be worth it and maybe its DA's long term plan) Danny clears even more space between now and next summer and goes nuts the summer of 2016. Take a look at this list of FAs for that summer

-Anthony Davis
-Kevin Durant
-Andre Drummond
-Michael Carter Williams
-Dwight Howard (I believe can opt out)
-Roy Hibbert
-Al Horford
-Damian Lillard
-Joakim Noah
-Nerlens Noel
-Deron Williams
-Brook Lopez

I just crapped my pants looking at that list...let's go on a theoretical shopping spree shall we?

Lliard/Durant/Anthony Davis/Drummond

Durant and Davis by 2016 will both be frustrated superstars and future hall of famers.
summer of 2016 = summer of 2007. Except Davis is a young KG and Durant is the 2nd best player in the league.

If we can get rid of Wallace we would have even more. Go after Marc gasol and Kevin love.

No one has convinced me that any big free agent will come to Boston. No one....

Davis? No one opts out of their rookie extension.

But even this is misleading. The trade didn't help in that in all. Had the trade never occurred, they'd actually have more salary flexibility (by a small amount) without Zeller.

Moreover, that number assumes we would renounce the rights to Rajon Rondo, which certainly isn't happening.

That's not to knock the trade; I like it. But the Celtics aren't in any better financial position now than they were yesterday. The numbers just look gaudier after adding Thornton's expiring deal.

But think in terms of trades at the deadline.

That's true.  But people were saying the same thing about Kris Humphries's expiring deal last year.

Again, I'm not knocking the space or the trade.  Both are good things.  But we'd have the same cap space next summer trade or no trade and it's far from a sure-thing that Thorton's expiring deal helps out in a deal.

actually wouldn't Davis be coming off his rookie contract? I bet you Pelicans will make the QO for him and he stays

but for Durant

"Hey Durant, how would you like to join the Celtics and average 40 pts, Rondo is a pass first pg, and wouldn't mind giving you the ball all the time if he can rack up 20 assist"

Not necessarily.

Not if he realizes he could get alot more money on the open market.

No one has convinced me that any big free agent will come to Boston. No one....

Not sure I agree with that, at least not yet.

The Celts have never really had a summer where they've had the resources to go out and land
 1-2 big time players.

Now if by 2017, we haven't landed a big fish, then yes it's becomes obvious Boston is not the place players want to be.

But if you offered someone enough cash, I am not totally sure they don't agree to come play here.

You could be right. However, the trend now seems to be that the top free agents are looking to go to teams that are going to contend almost immediately.

This is true. And not just contend immediately, but players want to go to cities that include nice weather (can't blame them there), hot nightclubs and a city which will increase their personal brand.

I do however just want to have one summer where the Celts can offer tons of cash to free agents at the very least to see what they say.

Which means Ainge has some work to do to put Boston in position to sign an A-list free agent next summer.

What if Minny doesn't trade Love, and we just sign him as a free agent next summer?

And honestly, that could end up being our best case scenario.

I mean I'd love to get Love now, but if Flip remains stubborn and decides to hang onto him, then next summer we offer him a max deal and we wouldn't have had to trade anything either.

i think thats all heavily contingent on where lebron chooses to sign this season. if he picks cleveland and they give him a 2 yr deal, wen love becomes a free agent, i cant see him passing up that situation to go to boston.

If renouncing Rondo means creating that much cap space, then by all means in my book.

LET'S GO CELTICS!
