And why would Carmelo sign here? lol.

Why wouldn't he?

We just finished with one of the worst records in the East... And ended up getting the sixth pick...

End of the story.

Unless we get Love, why in gods name would Melo ever want to join a team that most likely is on the path to re-building..

If Carmelo can't get this squad in to the playoffs and compete for a championship, then he's not worth having. And I'd find it very hard to believe.

That sounds like a great sales pitch we can give to Melo by phone in the jet hes using to fly around visit with all of the contenders hes shopping his services to.  Having Rondo on the roster right now is creating the delusion of the 2008 season.  He alone, isnt drawing a prime free agent to this City, with this roster.  Lets get real, we need to be focused on getting max value for Rondo as he doesnt fit with the rebuild we are clearly on the path of.

I wonder if Danny gave Greg Monroe's agent a call.

It pains me to say this, but creating cap space in Boston means squat. Top players don't sign as free agents with the Celts. Every top player we get comes from the draft or a trade. When have the Celtics ever signed a blue chip free agent in their prime?

Lakers, Heat, Knicks, and even the Texas teams can create cap space and attract big names. We can't.

Almost true, until you go to the specifics... when did Boston have the cap space to acquire anyone of note?
Ya know, I can't remember when we had big time cap space. Maybe in the early 2k's. All I can remember is an Old Dominique and Xavier Mcdaniel being our top free agent landings in my lifetime.

The problem with a RFA is that you'd need to manufacture the cap space before hand (do the trades) just to sign an offer sheet. I don't think this is the adequate manner to use that cap space. Too risky.

In reality the "risk" only works if it's a player that you can sign right away upon agreement.

If you want to lure a top free agent who is worth the effort of clearing some major cap space, it seems that the goal should be to give him an opportunity to join a team that is good enough to be capable of making the playoffs without him.

We haven't had any significant cap space since the 90s.  And back then we managed to waste it on players like Nique, Pervis Ellison, Dana Barror, Travis Knight, etc.  We were a poorly run team for quite some time.

BudweiserC - While I applaud your enthusiasm, the only way we are getting a marquee player is via trade.  Take a look at the link below and you'll see that there are an exorbitant amount of transactions that need to take place in order create the space that you are talking about.  If we don't have a firm commitment from someone, then why go through all of the trouble? It would be much easier to deal all of the non-guaranteed contracts (Bogans, Babb, Johnson, Pressey), some picks, and maybe a throw-in like Faverani to obtain the kind of star we need.

What are the exorbitant amount of transactions? We only need the TWO I mentioned and it gets it done.

And I also mentioned in the OP that you only make this moves if you have an agreement with a free-agent first.

Step 1:

Trade Jeff Green to Atlanta Hawks

Step 2:

Trade Brandon Bass to Charlotte Hornets

for this section specifically,
I actually think a Brandon Bass for Demarre Carroll ... and Jeff Green for Bismack Biyombo will benefit all parties involved. We get rid of role players in their prime, gain defensive role players and the math saves us 10 million for 2014-15 just from the exchange of these contracts.

I'm not attracted on money saving moves unless I have a specific free-agent in mind who has agreed to come to play for us.

That said, why would Atlanta want Brandon Bass?

They have Horford and Millsap, so unless they have a trade brewing, they have no need for another PF, particularly at his price tag.

What they need is, much like us, an actual center and an upgrade at a SF position (which is why I suggested Green in the first place).

I don't think any of the top FAs will sign with Boston until Ainge goes out and acquires another star to put alongside Rondo first.

Chicago and Houston are ready to challenge for NBA Championship right away. Boston are not and are thus not competitive from a basketball point of view with the best offers on the market. Ainge needs to get another star in here to make them competitive.

So I would say there is no point in creating cap space unless you are targeting one of the second tier stars like Greg Monroe, Eric Bledsoe, Lance Stephenson, Luol Deng, Gordon Hayward, Chandler Parsons or Pau Gasol ... because the A listers are not coming.
