I've been reading a lot of mixed review on the Smart selection at #6, but I'm here to convince you that you should be excited about having him on board. First, let me start by saying he was the right pick; when our time came last night, there was a clear-cut three guys who were head-and-shoulders above the others: Julius Randle, Noah Vonleh, and Smart. Randle and Vonleh both might be more sure things, but neither has the potential to take over a game. Don't get me wrong, I think they'll both be good NBA players, but Randle's game is outdated. Vonleh is a very passive player. And let's face it: we're pretty set at PF right now. If we're drafting a big guy, I don't want another "oh, he could play center, I guess." I want a center.

Which leaves us with Marcus Smart, the controversial but explosive guard. And I say guard because nobody knows whether to call him a PG or SG. But I'm going to give a bit of advice here: look at Smart as a SG and he looks a whole lot better. You've all heard by now that his game has been compared to Dwyane Wade, so I won't go into much detail there. Aside from just being a slasher, and a very strong one, he's also extremely confident, much like Wade. This goes back to what I said above about taking over a game. Randle and Vonleh can't do it, but I really think Smart can. He did it at the collegiate level, and there's nothing that tells me he can't translate that to the NBA level.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxXictCDDqA

Smart is a monster of an athlete. At the combine, he recorded a faster lane time than John Wall, Russell Westbrook, and Chris Paul. But perhaps even more impressive is that as of yesterday, Smart is the strongest guard in the NBA. Not the strongest rookie, the strongest of any guard in the league. Smart was able to bench 185 lbs 19 times at the combine, good for the third best mark in the entire class, and one of the best among guards historically. He has a 6'9" wingspan - as long as Rajon Rondo and two inches longer than Avery Bradley. He's as tall as Bradley, but weights 47 pounds more coming into the league.

What am I getting at here? Smart is going to be an amazing defender. He may be a little short for the SG spot, but he has the physical tools in every other area to handle most SGs with ease. Another thing: he averaged the most steals of any player selected in the draft at 2.9 per game. Now I'm an Avery Bradley fan, but Marcus Smart is our SG going forward. I don't think he is replacing Rajon Rondo, and I like the look of the two of them in the backcourt.

Some people might not like that backcourt, though. "Rondo can't shoot." "Smart can't shoot." I won't lie, Smart isn't the best three-point shooter statistically; he shot .299 from range in his sophomore season. But his mechanics are right, and when your mechanics are right your shooting will improve.

A Marcus Smart post wouldn't be complete without mentioning his maturity. I believe what happened with the pushing of the fan was an isolated incident, and was initiated when the fan used a racial slur. When we're assessing these players, we often forget that they are kids and they are human. Moreover, they are in the heat of a game with emotions running high. Smart is an emotional player, who made a mistake and let his emotion spill over in one case. Nothing else I have seen from him has indicated a lack of maturity; in fact quite the opposite. He has been called one of the most mature college basketball players in this draft. Below he discusses his decision to return for his sophomore season.

Oh, and I'd rather have an emotional player than a non-emotional one. Emotional players are the ones that change games. See: Kevin Garnett.

TL;DR Marcus Smart is mature, has killer instinct, is a freak athlete, and can exist alongside Rondo. He is a starting guard in this league, a true two-way player, and it wouldn't surprise me if he made a few all-star games.

Go Celtics!

I really don't get the disappointment about picking Smart.  The guy is a tough hardworking blue collar player who is going to fit the Celtics culture perfectly.  In my opinion I think he'd be the biggest surprise in the draft.  I can't wait to see what he can do under Brad Stevens and I think that's what people are forgetting the most about this.  With Brad Stevens at the hem, I am very confident these young already-talented players will blossom.

If we can get Love within a month, that means Smart is gone.  I'm very torn about that because I'm excited about this kid but I want Love more than anything at thesame time.  Either way, I love our team going forward.

Great post by OP by the way.  TP!

I was just gonna say--that's how to go about the weight room. Sully's off-season workout video (http://www.nba.com/celtics/video/archive) was just embarrassing.

I think too many people are thinking about this pick in relation to Rondo & Bradley and their future with the team. Put those emotions aside, and look at Smart as an individual, and it's clear the amazing level of talent he's bringing to the table. Is it redundant? Possibly. Does it make sense to keep all of those guys around? Probably not. However, don't let your emotions on how you feel about Rondo and/or Bradley cloud your judgment when evaluating Smart. He's got all-star potential.

I love the Marcus Smart pick.

We finally have a guard that will get to the free throw line and put the pressure on the defense in the 4th quarter.  That is huge.  We have not had that since Pierce did about 4 years ago.

Plus, he fills the stat sheet...rebounds, assists, steals, etc.

And last, the guy is a leader and plays with some serious passion.

Fantastic pick!

I just watched the Sully workout video.  That was [dang] funny.  That's the kind of workout you see chicks doing.  Sully should definitely tag along with Smart this summer.

I've been excited about Smart since watching him this past college season.  Like his game and see it translating well at the pro level.  Love his drive & intensity too.

He was the guy I wanted once the draft order was set and glad Danny got him.

I don't like this pick.  We already have a very good shooting guard that is getting better in Avery Bradley. And when you couple these 2 guys with the other dude they drafted, you have the potential of 3 competent guys fighting for minutes @ 1 position.  Even if the plan is to trade 1 of them, the lack of minutes will hurt their trade value.

The only way this makes any sense at all is if you plan to trade Rondo and either AB, MS, or Young in a blockbuster.

I see the same thing as you too

in my HONEST opinion

ROY boils down to Parker, Smart, and Exum

Idk why, Wiggins is a freak of nature, EXTREMELY athletic, but for some ODD reason, I don't see him contributing that much right away. Especially with Irving and Waiters on the team. And also, I see some people compare him to Jeff Green mentally...as in he just turns it on and off (inconsistent)

Parker will contribute and become the Bucks #1 option right away in my opinion and will become their best player really really fast

Smart - probably bias here but, I see more pros than cons in Smart...just his competitive nature itself gets a lot of points from me. He is an attacker, a tank. I hope we becomes ROY of course en-route to being an all star for the Celtics :)

I don't think Exum is going to do much his first year. He has been playing at a much lower level and I think he'll find it tough coming to the NBA and playing against NBA caliber athletes and defenders.

I think Parker is pretty much a shoo-in for the RoY award. Selfish gunner who'll jack up 20 shots a night and post big (albeit likely inefficient) point per game numbers. I think Parker is going to be the definition of the "empty stats" player his first few years in the league. But those ppg stats are going to be overwhelmingly good relative to rest of rookie class and that is what counts the most when it comes to RoY.

I think Wiggins and Smart will be the two rookies who help their teams the most next season. Defensive ability. Rebounding. Decent offense. Unlikely to post gaudy numbers but they'll do more to help their teams win games than the likes of Parker, Exum, Randle, Embiid or Vonleh.

Those are my expectations anyway.

Smart has the talent and body of a high floor and high ceiling player. Both are probably higher than Gordon, Vonleh and Randle. His floor is higher than Exum, due to his defense, strength and fire. Exum has the higher ceiling though.

Plus he is a competitive maniac. Those are very very good guys to have on your team.

He is gonna come into this league like a wrecking ball. And like a Westbrook he is gonna make bad plays and great plays, but the good will out weigh the bad.
