Looks likely Sully is massive :(
Say's he's been slow to workout due to rehabbing the ankle from the end of last season.  Certainly doesn't sound like a Kevin Love transformation.  Still can't justify the weight.  Just needs to eat less!!

Good luck trying to move him now. No pun intended.

Sully = Overrated

Most didn't expect much after drafting him and were surprised at the maturity of his game and ability to rebound.  But after an alright season, too many Celtics fans think he's the next KLove or even David West.  He's out of shape, overweight, and damaged.  He's a decent player, but not a future All-Star.

That analysis confuses me.  At first we didn't overrate him and then we did?  Who thinks he's the next KLove or DWest?  I haven't seen those posts.   I think most rate him as a better than average player with borderline all-star potential.  I don't think too many would be shocked if he winds up a good rotation player or ends up hampered by chronic back issues.

Hope that works for you because it was just a small portion of the articles and comments written.  As for the portion I wrote about many of us not expecting much out of him, most C's fans wanted Perry Jones III or Moutrie on draft night.  When we selected Sullinger many if not most thought he was an undersized, extremely unathletic (after combine), injury prone player who wouldn't amount to much.  He proved many of our original assumptions wrong but now we think to highly of him.  WE constantly overvalue our own talent.

Aren't some people genetically predisposed to being fat?

Yes, just like some people are genetically predisposed to being drug addicts.

That doesn't mean being a drug addict is okay.

This is because it's completely possible to overcome genetic predisposition, so long as you try hard enough not to do drugs or not to eat unhealthy food.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

The difference between a good and bad metabolism is only like 200 calories a day.

I'm not an expert on weight loss/weight gain (I've always been skinny and have trouble GAINING weight) but if you are a professional athelete, is it really that hard to lose like 10-20 pounds???

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Rich man's glen davis.  Dunno why people look at fat players and assume they'll get into shape like Kevin Love or Perk.   Most fat players remain fat players.

Because weight loss shouldn't be difficult with world-class trainers and nutritionalists.
Which is why players who gain weight over their first 2 seasons... probably aint getting slim anytime soon.  If they transform their bodies, it's probably happening pretty quick... not year 3.

Is that your 'gut' feeling? :)
I think he deserves a bit more time than that considering his injury history since entering the league. He's only just finished his first full off season, and doesn't have surgery to recover from either. He's allowed to get drive thru for a few weeks IMO.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Who cares how much our back up power forward weighs???  He's only gotta play 10 minutes a night behind Kelly.  He'll be bale to handle that at 280.

The general scientific consensus is that ~3500 calories = 1 lb of body weight.  So if you're at a daily deficit of 500 calories, you'd lose about 1 lb per week.  This weight loss of course would not continue indefinitely, as your body will reach a plateau and the weight loss would slow down and eventually stop.

If Sully hasn't lost any weight yet, then that's pretty disappointing, genetic predisposition or not.  It's not hard to reduce caloric intake by the hundreds by making smart food choices/limiting portion sizes (unless Sully eats very cleanly, which I highly doubt).  Plus, he could always increase the length and /or intensity of his cardio workouts, being a professional athlete and all.

Whoever expected Sullinger to be 240 pounds next season needed to put their expectations in check anyway. He stated that he's targeting 260 for the start of training camp. If he's been at 280+ for the past year, 260 is an excellent weight to target because it would make for a gradual weight loss over the next 3-4 months.

He might never be 240 and he doesn't need to be... He needs to be in the condition that allows him to be the fastest version of himself, maintain his strength, health, and his stamina is at its peak.

I care.  I'd imagine most of the rest of the blog cares.  In sports, especially professional sports, the ability to make a play or not is decided by milliseconds and millimeters.  Everything counts.

There are of course athletes who seem to perform at the same level (i.e. same quickness, jumping ability) despite modest weight loss.  Whether that's true for Sully remains to be seen, but I think he'd benefit not only from a performance standpoint, but perhaps a career longevity one as well.

That's where spending a summer recovering from back surgery comes into play. You'd have expected him to do more conditioning last summer if not for that.

We could all also expect him to watch what he eats during his recovery so he doesn't come into camp pushing 300 pounds.

Why don't you regale us with tales about exactly what he ate during his recovery?

Sure man, but first I'd love to hear you explain to us all again how Rondo is a top 3 point guard still.
You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.
