Have to wonder how much of his decision is based on Tim Duncan.  Must kill him to see Duncan continue to perform at an elite level on a championship team.   KG's regressed, though... Duncan's per-minute production has basically stayed consistent throughout his entire career.   If Duncan retired, KG would probably retire.

There aren't a heck of a lot of opportunities to make $12 million.  You do it as long as you can.

He's made over $300mm during his career. What's an extra $12mm?
A roughly 4% increase of his effective lifetime earnings for his career. (using 300 as his total salary)

Its real easy to say no to money when its not yours.

Per ESPN

Not sure this is a good idea, KG.

I think getting paid is an excellent idea for him.

Other than bringing "down" his career PPG/RPG/etc what's the harm? Play till they won't pay you or the work isn't worth it anymore.

It makes me sad to see him so diminished, but that happens to all athletes.

It hurts me to watch a guy play after he should've retired.

Doesn't BKN have a buyout clause for half of KG's salary?  Wonder if they'd consider it.

Either way he's not going to be starting next year if Lopez is healthy.  Hope he's ok with that.

I can't imagine there is anyone left who would say KG was better than Duncan, but if there was, the last two years should have ended that debate.  It probably was a combo of being stronger, genetics, and also playing more fundamental basketball that allowed Duncan to be so much more solid over the long run. Duncan has now played over 61,000 minutes in his career, with KG at 54,100. Duncan has been a freak of nature.

His contract was half-guaranteed for the final year, but the Nets agreed to fully guarantee it as a condition for Garnett agreeing to a trade.

This is a good example of meaningless definitive speculation.  So many people over the course of the year declared with certainty: KG will retire after this season.   I always wonder when I read these types of statements just how people know what other people are thinking.  Of course it's everyone's right to speculate but I have a pet peeve with those who speculate with both certainty and minimal information.

This may be good for our future draft picks.
That's what I was thinking. I hope he comes back and stinks the place up!

Older than dirt...
Show some respect to the guy who brought this team a championship, single-handedly anchored a top-5 defense, played like a true team player, made others better, played for the team and not for himself and made the Celtics releveant again.

*sigh* Some Celtics fans...seriously.

Duncan isn't elite anymore. He has better supporting cast and a far better coach, who can all cover up Duncan's weaknesses or failures. You really think KG would be looking this bad if he wasn't the only legit rim-protecting big man on his team for the past 3-4 years and wasn't expected to do everything a the big men of the team are supposed to do all by himself?

No, I am not in some sort of denial that KG is still an MVP player. But people like to completely disregard KG's supporting cast versus Duncan's supporting cast. Duncan has players to hide his old-age mistakes. KG doesn't have anyone down low to help him out. If you asked Dwight Howard to do be the only big man on the team and do everything himself, he will get tired way sooner and make far more mistakes.
