How ironic if Embiid slips to 6th pick, but we draft another player desired by Wolves to facilitate the trade, and the Lakers snatch Embiid, and go on to win another 4 NBA championships. That would sting.

Something tells me the guy with the bad back and foot isn't going to help the Lakers win a title.

Bailey Howell's point about the Wolves not putting out any feelers about using their own 13th pick to add a veteran to make the playoffs is the most interesting one that I have read in the whole Love trade discussion. Clearly there is a bunch of posturing and theater in what Saunders is doing, but that should not be confused with actually taking the Celtic's offer. Clearly Ainge believes that Saunders doesn't like our offer and doesn't seem interested in helping us involve a third team to get veteran players he might like. You get the feeling Ainge has moved on to alternate plans while still leaving their offer out there in case Saunders comes to his senses. The only possibility left is that Saunders is behaving irrationally and believes that he alone can get Minnesota into the playoffs and change Love's mind. This is probably caused by a combination of three factors: stubbornness, ego and the residue of the Garnett trade. When you put all three of these things together you get this kind of stupid, franchise destroying behavior. I am so glad not to be a Wolves fan.

If you take Love off the T-Wolves, no one short of LeBron or Durant is going to improve them going forward so I don't think there are any players Ainge could swing to make a difference.  If he could get another team willing to take on Kevin Martin, that might help.

I can't believe an NBA veteran like Flip is being this stupid.  Barring multiple playoff-caliber teams suffering season-ending injuries to one or more of their starters, there's nothing Minny's going to do that will make them any better than the 7th or 8th seed out West.  That's not going to change Love's mind about staying and the more they drag this out, the less they're going to get for him.

Maybe he's just waiting to take advantage of some team, like Houston or Chicago, who get desperate when they miss out on Melo or LeBron.

Mike

While it's true that Minny won't improve minus Love, they're sort of stuck.  They have four more years of Pekovic.  They want to extend Rubio.  It's not like they can clear house Philly style -- they've got a lot of dollars committed for a couple of years, and it's been practically a decade since they made the playoffs.  We laugh about striving to be the 8th seed here, but reaching that achievement would be the best Minnesota has done in a long time.  They positioned themselves to start trying to make the playoffs, really as early as last year, and there would be a sizable cost in diverting from that.  While they have only themselves to blame for being in this position, it's not clear to me that getting primarily draft picks is a very good option for them.

i'm not laughing, i'm serious when I say that's a horrible goal.

there's yr's as a fan that you have to accept that you're team might not be all that good. I would never accept a team willingly be mediocre as a goal. not with no intent or belief they will be better.

Why would GS agree to a trade that nets the Celtics KLove??? We're in competition for KLove, why would they do that?
We would have to trade Olynyk, Bass, 6th pick, filler, and 2015 Clippers pick to the Warriors for Thompson and Lee.

Then reroute Lee and Thompson, along with 17th pick, Sullinger, and Green for Love/Martin.  That would give the Wolves Rubio, Thompson, Green, Lee, Pekovic.

Would Golden State trade Thompson for Olynyk and basically Marcus Smart?  Would they let Lee go for salary cap relief and a future pick?

Danny has the future Nets picks to try and sweeten the pot, but that is really everything he has to offer.

Leaves us with Love, Rondo, Wallace, Bradley, Martin, and hopefully Asik.

Golden State is paying Bogut 14 mil for 3 more years.  Igoudala 13 mil for 3 more years.  Curry 10 mil for 3 more years.   They still have to pay Lee 14 mil for 2 more years, it makes sense to trade him so they can have money to pay a 4th guy.  They wont be able to pay Thompson next summer, so trading him for Olynyk and the 6th pick will save them a ton in the long run.

Plus Wolves maybe dont want just Lee and Thompson, we can add Sullinger and 17th pick at the very least to make the offer a little better.

Making the playoffs in the West is not mediocre.  That required 50 wins this year.  Minnesota will never be in a position to go from missing the playoffs to being a championship contender in a season.  They're going to need to make incremental steps.  Making the playoffs is an important step.  It's a goal, but it's not the final goal.

I'm a fan of Michigan basketball.  There was a decade long period, encompassing most of the 2000s, where being a fan wasn't all that much fun if you wanted to make the Final Four every year.  They missed the tournament most years, and wound up in the NIT instead.  One year they won it, and another year they made the finals of that tournament.  On the whole the seasons were disappointing, but it was fun to root for them in the NIT.  When they finally made the tournament, they weren't expected to go far, and they didn't, but it was still fun to watch.  Now they've made that leap where they're expected to make a deep run.  It was a process, and still is, because the next goal is winning.  But despite the relative mediocrity of the NIT, it was enjoyable as a step along the way.

Sort of. He didn't play much in either Boston finals or Orlando finals. He was there third best player behind Kobe and gasol. Honestly sometimes odom was more valuable. Phil certainly trusted him more.

soooo then we're taking Thompson and Lee off GS and adding to the C's  - then the C's would turn around and trade Thompson and Lee to Minny? Is that it - or am I missing it?
I don't see GS trading to give the C's the main chips to get the guy that THEY (GS) want(s).
Unless you are saying that KLove stay in Minny????

Why would GS agree to a trade that nets the Celtics KLove??? We're in competition for KLove, why would they do that?

Embiid is already broken down.

Yes, he could be great in a few years, but just like many in this draft we just don't know.

If we traded for Klay and David Lee I think I'd rather keep them and the 17th pick plus Green/sully/Kelly or whoever else we would have to ship out.  I'd rather have that deep team and then try to add for 2015 then ship all that off just for Love.
