If there is now a chance we could get Embiid would you stay in draft and go for him or would you give up picks to get Love?  For me there is a lot of risk with Embiid but an incredible amount of upside, the kind that doesn't come along very often.  I would stay in draft and go for Embiid, I think the risk is worth it, I actually am very excited just at the possibility.

We will probably end up doing neither...

If we take the Kevin Love path, I think we would make additional moves... probably target Melo and try to compete immediately.

If we take the Embiid path, I really think Rondo gets traded and we build around the youth.

Either way, I think I'll be happy with either of those results.  More likely we just pick someone else 6th and fail to trade for an impact star.

TP, I would be happy with either love or embiid/trading rondo. At least if we got embiid we could pin our future on him while we trade Rondo. And honestly, if we keep our pick I will be content with Smart or Exum and maybe Vonleh if Ainge is sold on him.

this shouldn't even be a debate. you trade for Love. embiid's injury is the same as yao ming's injury.

Not a debate, just wondered what others would do.  Embiid is Embiid and no one knows how this will turn out for his future.  No doupt it is a red flag, but we would have no chance of getting him if this didn't happen.

better yet, send him next door to the media lab so that they can build him a new foot out of self-regenerating materials

Why? not sure. Bored I Guess, but if by why you mean why would we have no chance, because he would be gone in the top 3 and I think it would be tough for us to move into the top 3.

I keep flipping back and forth between Embiid and Love if Embiid is still available at #6. I'm wondering if Embiid's injury could somehow make Love a cheaper acquisition for the Celtics by expanding the deal to a 3 team trade.

Assuming Embiid's on the board at #6, does anybody else think Ainge will have teams offering them assets that could be flip to Minnesota along with #17, Sully or Olynik, and maybe the Philly protected pick for Love?

I don't know who that 3rd team would be, or what it is that Minnesota would be looking for. I'm just wondering if this stress fracture might increase the value of that #6 pick enough that DA could possibly get Love without giving up any of the BKN picks or the LAC pick?

I suppose it could be the other way around too, if this is such a red flag that nobody's going to want to risk moving up for Embiid, the #6 pick just lost some value because someone else is going to be off the board that would have been there had Embiid gone in the top 3 as originally projected.

So without knowing the final cost of acquiring Love, or the actual medical report on Embiid, I guess I'm still inclined to try to flip picks for the less risky Kevin Love, then use the remaining assets to build around a Rondo / Love core over the next few years.

Try for Embiid how?  I mean, most people are saying it is unlikely to get to #4 for get Exum.  Wouldn't it be equally unlikely to get to #4 to get Embiid?  I mean, I understand the injury concerns but he still has a lot of value.

If he falls to us, great.  But I don't think it will happen.

I think Plan A should be to try and trade for Love.  In my mind, that does not change depending on whether or not Embiid drops to us or not.  Plan A.1 could be getting Melo in place of Love or in addition to Love but I don't see that as being as likely as getting Love.

If Plan A fails, I think Plan B then should become trading Rondo for picks, (moving up if possible), young players, or some combination.  Again, this does have anything to do with Embiid.  If somehow trading Rondo landed us say the second pick (hypothetically) I would actually be happier to get Parker or Wiggins over the now exposed injury riddled Embiid.  If the trading got us say the seventh pick and Embiid dropped to us, great, pick Embiid and Gordon.

If Plan B fails (we are not able swing a "good" trade for Rondo), I think we are in trouble as I believe we will lose Rondo to FA and get nothing.

Its all about the price.. If Embiid falls to 4 or 5 and it would cost a future #1 or the 17th this year do it.. If Minny is asking for too much (GSW trade offer holds then the Celtics are out) .. can not compete with Thompson price tag.. but if the Celtics get LOve for a few firsts and KO then that should be top priority.. Also there is no reason to trade Rondo unless they are unsure about his position staying with the Celtics.. He is one of the most underateted commodities in the NBA.. A true PG who can defend and rebound.. Only CP3 , Parker, and Westbrook can do the same as he can.

I would also keep an eye on Noah if the bulls do sign Melo to the max.. lots of money on the books over there even if Boozer is amnestied..

I could see the Celtics and Orlando working something out for a Rondo for Pick 3 trade.

Like, perhaps:

Rondo, #6, to Orlando for:
#3 (Embiid) and #12.

If that seems like too much, realize that Rondo isn't going to re-sign with Orlando this summer, just like he refuses to re-sign with Boston. That affects his trade value negatively and significantly.

Orlando still retains enough assets to make a playoff run this year and try to convince Rondo to re-sign next summer.

Rondo
Afflalo
Tobias Harris
Randle
Vucivic

With Oladipo as super sub.

Celtics would have

Embiid
Sully/KO
Green/Saric or McDermott
Bradley
Elfrid Payton or Tyler Ennis or Shabazz Napier

Love -- Embiid too much of an injury risk. K-Love is a sure thing. K-Love over Embiid.
