Several NBA executives believe Tavares, who is 7-foot-3, has a strong chance to work himself into the first round of this month's NBA draft, and several teams choosing in the range of the 20s plan to bring him in for closer inspections, sources said.

I like Tavares, and his background story is definitely interesting. I don't know if hes going to go anywhere close to the 13th pick. I would say hes definitely worth a late first, but I'm hesitant on big men especially of his size, as his durability and injury issues come to mind.

It's hard to get a read on his bbiq because he is new to the game.

I wouldn't want to reach on a guy when tons of centers are coming out next year. But I also wouldn't want to pass on a decent Hibbert clone when the positional need is there.

The 2014 draft might have the strongest late 1st / 2nd round of all time. I could see several productive players coming late in this draft, along with a couple total surprises with significant upside / all-star potential.

I actually feel that the place to be drafting is late first round and early 2nd round with multiple picks. Teams like the Heat, OKC, Spurs etc should all have chances to land quality players for a change.

I like that we have these scouting videos now, but this one could be used as an example of people who believe any hype they hear.

From the 1st video, about 1:25 it says one of his strengths is setting solid screens.  They show 3 plays: one illegal screen/hip check and two where he never set a screen at all.  If they're going to say he sets solid screens, at least show us one!

About 3:07 it says of his rebounding strength: "does a really nice job boxing out and keeping offensive players off the glass."  First play they show his man gets right by him, he only got the board because it went over his man's head.  That's not a box out.  Of the 6 plays they show here, he was 2 for 3 on box out attempts, and neither of the successful ones were a very good box out.

At 4:48 it says one of his strengths (when referring to interior D) is "timing & instincts," but then at 8:52 it lists a weakness as trying to block everything, and at 10:00 is says will bite on fakes.  Now maybe this is more of an interpretation issue, but I consider those to be opposites.  If you have good timing & instincts, then you don't try to block everything and you don't bite on fakes, because those represent poor timing & instincts. But maybe this last one is just on me.

Anyway, just saying, you know how some people believe everything someone else tells them.  I'm sure there will be some people who rave about how good he is at setting picks, because that video said so, even though they didn't show one pick.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Would rather do a deal with Utah to include Rudy Gobert. I think he is going to be a solid option if given time.

From what I'm seeing, he'll be a disaster in the NBA, where he won't be able to camp in the paint, and where most of the defense is centered around defensive recognition and rotation -- rather than guarding considerably smaller men straight-up.

And yet, I'm sure there'll be a team that sees 7'3 on the scouting report, and goes gaga. I just hope it won't be us.

Guys that tall are rarely durable.  Kareem is the only tall guy over 7-2 who had a long career.

A. Sherrod Blakely: Getting international players in for workouts isn't easy, but the #Celtics will see 7-2 Walter Tavares this week.

i guess. but if ainge buys a second round pick to spend on this guy i would have not problem. there is no way ainge picks mr. 7'3' at number 17, so i am not worried.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Agreed.  Not a first round pick. Risk of bust is too great.  His upside is basically Asik, taller, but less mobile.  Zero offensive skill set.  Just feel like we've seen this type of prospect before.  Nervous about his gait, looks like he has bad knees.  NOt saying he does, just runs very awkwardly.

I'm sure this is due diligence in case a 2R pick is easily available, or that the guy goes undrafted. Or at least I hope it is...
