I've been reading a lot of posts guessing at what might be reasonable trade value for KLove so I started wondering what past star players have fetched in trades. Here are a few I think are relevant:

Kevin Garnett: Jefferson and two 1st round picks. This deal was much bigger than just the listed assets but those are the highlights. My feeling is that we'll have to give up at least this much for Love. Something in the neighborhood of Sully OR Olynyk and two 1st rounders will be where it starts for Minnesota. Love is in his prime while KG was older. That will certainly play a role.

Dwight Howard: Three (protected) 1st rounders plus Aaron Afflalo, Moe Harkless, Nicola Vucevic and a massive TPE. This is probably the most relevant trade as it was under the same CBA and involves a dominant front court player in the last year of their contract.

Carmello Anthony:  One 1st round pick, Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler and Timofey Mosgov.
I actually don't think the Nuggest "won" this trade as much as everyone has said. Those 3 players are good but none were flipped as assets. The 1st rounder in 2014 is the real asset. It ended up being #11 which should yield another solid rotation player.

Deron Williams: Two 1st round picks and Derrick Favors. Enez Kanter was the 2011 pick, the 2012 pick I couldn't really figure out what happened but from what I gather they lost the pick in some strange pick-protection. At the time DWill was a top-5 PG and a case can be made that the Nets basically traded three 1st round picks for him. This is in line with what I expect to be Love's price.

Chris Paul: Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu and an unprotected 2012 (from Minnesota) as well as two 2nd round picks. Essentially Gordon and a 1st which turned out to be Austin Rivers.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So looking back I think the richest deal was for Howard, and rightly so. Dominant big men are once-in-a-generation commodities these days. I'd be willing to come close to that offer for Love but certainly no higher, especially considering how it worked out for the Lakers. I don't think Love is on par with Howard as an NBA talent but he's in his prime and playing like a top-5 player at the moment. I wouldn't move the rumored four 1st rounders for Love, especially with no guarantee of his resigning. I'm not even sure I'd move 3, maybe if there are pick protections. I'd give up 2 unprotected picks for Love and probably Sullinger but I'd rather send Olynyk.

My first best offer is Sully or KO plus #6 and #17.  Depending on whether they value Sully or KO at all this should be enough.  If they do not value Sully or KO much, then I would begrudgingly throw in next year's Clipper pick.  That is as far as I would go.

Anything more than 3 firsts, Sully/Olynyk and the non guaranteed guys is too much in my book.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Yup, I kinda had the same package in mind.  3 picks, Sully, and non guaranteed guys to match salaries was what I figured it would take to get it done from Minny's point of view
CB Draft LA Lakers: Lamarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony,Jrue Holiday, Wes Matthews  6.11, 7.16, 8.14, 8.15, 9.16, 11.5, 11.16

#6 + 4 more 1sts + Kelly + sully + green/Wallace is probably pushing it a little, but it's defensible if Danny has a 3rd star in the bag... Like melo as a free agent

I'd take back some contracts in addition to what Evantime34 said.

So a similar package but with us taking on Mbah a Moute, Martin, Barea or Buddinger, while sending out Bass or Green?

What would be your order of preference for contracts to take back?

[dang] he better be signing an extension immediately if we give up that much.

Sully and a #6 this year and a first round pick next year.   Throw in Bass if we have too.

I think Love for Sully/6th pick/17th pick/ 2 future picks/filler is the standard deal most fans and twolves fans think is relatively fair.

If Im the celtics I try and keep the Nets pick and if they play hardball and only want a nets pick i'd try and give them Olynyk instead of Sullinger.

Martin is intriguing with his shooting ability. Although he is a wretched defender..

Kyle Lowry, Dwayne Wade, 13th pick in even numbered rounds, 18th pick in odd numbered rounds.

If the bidding gets out of hand, that might be what it takes. However, I don't think it's reasonable at all. I don't want to send 4 1st round picks (unless you had a couple of 2nd's in mind). I'm reluctant to send three! I hope we can do the 6th pus a future Celtics or Clippers first, Sullinger, Bass, pluss filler. If that's not enough, then maybe a third 1st.

The Wolves probably won't want the #17, because then if they resign their pick, the #6 and the #17 when their rookie contracts are up, it will be 3 in the same year.  That is a salary cap kiss of death right there, although they are traditionally a terribly run franchise so maybe they don't think that far ahead.  We'll probably end up with someone serviceable like TJ Warren, but we'll have to give another pick next year.

I'd be really happy trading our #6, our 2015 Clippers pick (now that Sterling is selling), our 2016 first rounder, Sully, Bogans and filler.  3 first rounders, although only one will be in the lottery, a redundant player and a guy we want off our team.  That would be a great

  • Let's Go Celtics!
My proposal:

Boston Sends: #6 + #17 + the Nets' 2016 1st + both Philly 2nd Rounders we're due (likely to be early 2nd round) + Kelly (the fans seem to prefer him to Sully) + Bass + Bogans + Vito Faverani

Minny Sends: Kevin Love + JJ Barea (or Alexey Shved if they prefer)

2021 Houston Rockets
PG: Kyrie Irving/Patty Mills/Jalen Brunson
SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo/Robert Covington
C: Kristaps Porzingis/Bobby Portis/James Wiseman

I tend to agree with this. Sullinger, the #6, and a future first is a pretty desirable package for a player who is definitely going to leave next year and has no obligation to remain with his new team. The Cs are competing with other teams for Love's services, the Wolves are basically just going to choose the best package that suits them best.

This is what I would do, except I'd try to keep the Net's pick and give them the Clippers.
PHX Suns: Russell Westbrook, Chris Bosh, Tristan Thompson, Trevor Ariza, Tony Allen, Trey Lyles, Corey Brewer, Larry Nance Jr., Trey Burke, Troy Daniels, Joffrey Lauvergne, Justin Holiday, Mike Muscala, 14.6
